Hi Branthunter, good point and you're absolutely right...

In order to provide further info on how the method of flossing adversely effects the environment, the resource, and many anglers enjoyment of the sport of fishing itself, check out the new links I have added at the end of the article...it's not the be all and end all on the issue, but it might help shed some light on how this fishery can create problems during other seasons and in other sportfisheries...

...and you have my sincerest thanks for your participation! All opinions, in agreement or otherwise, are very much appreciated...more dialogue on this subject generates more thought and understanding, so I am glad you chimed in...!

In fact I am surprised more haven't commented seeing as how there have been so many views of this blog...

Feel free to comment everyone, we can always agree to disagree if no common ground can be found, one of the main objectives here is for people to start thinking about it from varying perspectives and realize that our choices have more impact than one might initially think.

" i have a hard time calling it fishing ".----------- Fishing is trying to catch fish as far as I'm concerned. As long as the method doesn't adversely affect the environment or the resource as a whole it is up to the individual to decide what his or her "sport" is. I've met fly fishers who think that fishing with bait is not fishing.

a good read rib...a lot of good points for sure.....i think most of us have participated in this event at some point in our fishing adventures....i have a hard time calling it fishing because it is what it is.....now don,t get me wrong i don,t begrudge anyone going out to get a few socks for the bbq, i have done it myself in the past and i too have hooked sockeye right in the mouth but the facts don,t lie, that prob well over 90% (just an educated guess) are snagged....this is without a doubt, for me anyway, the most unenjoyable time ever on any body of water in the quest for fish.....the crowds, the fighting, bickering, threats, the garbage, the motor bikes crawling up your back(pegleg) the toal lack of respect for fish and fisherman by a certain percentage of the throngs out there, the disrespect shown from some of the boaters out there....all of these questions on the forum about monstrously long leaders and i too have witnessed it any time i have been out there, they are just not needed, i have never used a leader longer than 8 or 9 feet, i have hit sockeye at all stages of the drift, i have never, ever reefed back on feeling a bump, have always soft set and have never had a problem hooking them....i have fly fished for them a couple of times at Gill road and i must admit that was fun but the place was almost empty and on the fly rod a sockeye is a battle.....bottom line is there is so much more out there, go get your sockeye if you want but if thats is the brunt of your fishing experiences you don,t know what your missing

Well said Rib. Alot of us have taken hero shots that we probably regret. But we learn and evolve as anglers. I would like to add to this by saying NO GLOVES.
Handling fish with or without gloves removes their protective slime the gloves just really amplify this.
By keeping the fish in the water ensures your hands are wet. I would really like to see new regulations to this effect for
wild fish. No gloves and keep the fish in the water.

I must say tho Rib it seems to me that the pics I have seen lately have been more and more with the steelhead in the water which is good.

So rant on as I believe the attention brought to this topic has and is getting through at least to those who frequent these forums. Hopefully this knowledge will be passed along to non-internet anglers .
