A few years back I recieved a desk calander complete with a collection of quotes and little passages pertaining to sport fishing that were penned by some well known and not so well known personalities through out history. I thought it would be kind of cool to share some of these with you over the next while. So here's the first quote I'll share with you.
" You will find angling to be like the virtue of humility, which has a calmness of spirit and a world of other blessings attending upon it." - Izaak Walton, The complete Angler
Sometimes we forget to recognize some of the gifts fishing brings to us outside of the catch. Much like every weekend I was out yesterday on the flow walking the banks, chucking flies, and waiting for that pull. We hit a beautiful stretch of water I had my eye on since the begining of the season, but up until then had not been able to get into and fish because of the popularity of this paticular run all season for producing fish. It wasn't a big run, but it did have some prime water very well suited to pass a fly through. For the first time yesterday we were able to get in and fish it. As we walked up the river bank to the top end we noticed a couple of well known local old timers just beggining their descent down the run. Instead of moving on to some where else we decided to wait our turn, start above them and follow them through. Of course as we passed behind the one fellow batting clean up behind his friend, we stopped and chatted. An hour and a half later after my fishing partner had fished through the peice of water almost twice over our conversation, which had touched most subjects of fishing came to a close and we went our seperate ways. I did eventually get to fish through at a break neck speed while my buddy graciously waited. However that conversation and the bits and pieces of info regarding many things that I picked up, and the perspectives that I shared I won't soon forget. In the end I spent a good part of a fishable day on the water and I barely fished, and it was well worth it. A great example of our sport providing common ground for the different generations. Age knows no boundries when it comes to how we love sport fishing.
