Ok all...the cell phone thread, LoL.

Curious, who do you go with, horror stories or good ones. What phones do you use, which would you never use again, blah, blah, blah...Apps worth getting, neat quirks of your smart phone, why you hate that you switched from your flip phone or don;t bother getting a cell phone at all...anything goes, well, almost anything, the site rules still apply.

The wife and I recently switched from Bell...

We're now running on the wind network with a couple of nexus phones, new territory for me for sure, hard to switch from the old fashioned due dad, but enjoying the unlimited internet and checking in on the site on a whim...!

Hi gang -

I've just joined your forum this week. I'm a long time fisherman since I was a little kid casting spinners in Ontario (pike, walley) and then as a teen here in BC. When I hit my mid-20s, I got into flyfishing (and got addicted).

Since then my focus has been using a 4x4 to gain access to the lesser fished waters and fished from either a 12' smokercraft OR my float-tube. As I'm now hitting 54 years old, I decided to finally make the big purchase and buy the long sought after power boat. With this boat I'm hoping to broaden out my fishing to include the Fraser, bigger lakes in the interior and some salt chuck.

I'm also not fussy about switching back to to spinning tackle or whatever it takes to catch fish. Flyfishing will still be my favorite but spinning gear is fun too..

Thanks for having me on board.

Riley

Mid May Report

It is May 16th and the past 5 days the weather has been nice and sunny with clear blue skies. Although this means great weather in the city and on the patio, for the fisherman it often means we have to contend with some NW winds that come along with the high pressure system and sun.

Last weekend the wind co-operated and I counted 47 boats fishing the Thrasher Rock area. After the great fishing we had there earlier in the week, with a hot and sunny Saturday and flat calm seas, this was really no surprise. The action was a little slower on the weekend and our boats hit 3 to 4 chinook each, and each boat came back with a few nice ones in the box. There was also some good action off the Hump as well as some fish being caught right in the harbor around the freighters.

Two nice chinook taken from the middle of Vancouver Harbor on a sunny Saturday afternoon

The fish this week have mostly been red springs in the 10lb-15lb range and a fair number of hatchery fish. We were catching these fish in Vancouver Harbor, on the Hump, and all the way over to Thrasher. The white springs and marbled springs we were encountering the week before seemed to have moved on.Fish have been caught anywhere from 40 to 180 feet in some spots, but the most productive depths seem to be in the 80-110 foot range. Glow/Green spoons have been working well, the spatter back hootchies continue to produce (OG142R and OG144R), white UV hootchies have been good (OAL12R), and of course bait is always a good bet, both herring and anchovies. If you need bait we have a good selection of anchovies and herring, even the larger anchovies which are often hard to get.We aren’t heading out on the water today as it looks like it is going to gust up to 25 knots NW and that combined with the ebb tide is going to produce some nasty conditions this morning. It looks like the NW wind is going to die off on Friday as a low pressure system comes in and things switch to SE. We might get a few showers starting Sunday but I will take that chance as long as we get rid of these big NW winds so we can get out off the Hump or run over to Thrasher. That being said, some of our charters in the harbor this week out produced the boats at Thrasher and the Hump, including guide Eddie boating the two nice chinook pictured above on Saturday, and guide Craig hitting a tripple header to start the day off on Sunday! It just goes to show you that even if you can’t run across or fish offshore, it pays to get out there and get the lines wet.

We will be on the water Saturday, Sunday and Monday, so see you out there on or in the shop!

Sport fishing column for May 14 to 21, 2012

Picking up from where we left off last week, lets look at the PFD (personal floatation device), or as it is often referred to the life jacket.

We all know that it is important to wear one in the boat, if for no other reason than to set a good example for the kids. Right? I know; they are bulky, awkward, and a general nuisance, when it comes to the freedom of movement we need as fisherman. That excuse is not accepted anymore since the advent of inflatable belts and collars.

One area where the use of the PFD is sorely lacking is in wading. Every year the newspapers carry the stories of anglers who pushed the envelope too far and drowned as a result. Wading can be a hazardous practice when not done properly. As one who stumbled into the pitfalls of unsafe wading, due to the lack of safety training on this subject, I am a strong advocate of safe wading. Use your PFD and wading belt! Never over estimate your ability to wade safely or under estimate the force of water. Pay attention to the stability of the bottom you intend to walk on. Rock and banks can be undermined and give way when you commit your weight to them. Quicksand; yes quicksand, it is out there lurking under the surface in some steams and can grip you like a vice. If you don't know to deal with it you can end up stuck for hours if not days. Tides; many coastal streams rise and fall with the tide. If you don't watch this one you can find yourself stranded midstream, waiting for the tide change.

The Report

Our lower mainland lakes look great for fishing this long weekend. For wet (sinking) fly trout fishing try: Chironomid, Bloodworm, Red Spratley, Coachman, Zulu, American Coachman, Professor, Wooly Bugger, Micro Leach, Dragonfly Nymph, Sixpack, Doc Spratley, Pumpkinhead, or Baggy Shrimp. For dry (floating) fly trout fishing try: Tom Thumb, Irresistible, Royal Coachman, Renegade, Elk hair Caddis, Black Gnat, Griffith Gnat, or Lady McConnel. For panfish try: Wooly Bugger, Micro Leach, Bucktail, Dolly Whacker, Bloodworm, Chironomid.

Fishing on most of our interior lakes is good. For wet fly fishing try: Chironomid, Bloodworm, Halfback, 52 Buick, Pumpkinhead, Big Black, Micro Leach, Coachman, Green Spratley, Carey Special, Souboo, or Baggy Shrimp. For Dry fly fishing on those warm afternoons, try: Lady McConnel, Black Gnat, Double Hackled Peacock, Griffith Gnat, Elk Haired Caddis, Irresistible, Sofa Pillow, or Tom Thumb.

The Fraser River is fishing fair in the cleaner water around its feeder streams. For cutthroat try: Eggo, Egg & Eye Alevin, Rolled Muddler, Tied Down Minnow, Mickey Finn, Stonefly Nymph, Czech Nymph, or American Coachman. For dolly varden try: large (Size 4 to 1) Zonker, Eggo, Big Black, Dolly Whacker, Mickey Finn, or Clouser's Deep Minnow.

The Harrison River is high but fishable for cutthroat and rainbow. For rainbow try: Big black, Kaufmann Stone, Sixpack, Irresistible, Czech Nymph, Zulu, olive Wooly Bugger, Souboo, or Renegade.

I will be up in area north of Nanaimo to Pt Mcniell this summer. Has anybody had any experience with trolling off a sailboat for salmon? I generally motor at 6 kts, but can go slower, but not much faster. Any recommendations on gear, and techniques, would be appreciated.

Thanks
