Not a bad idea , gives you a simple attaching point at one end without a large rack. Still need one at front though.

I've use one similar to above that works very well for one guy
it is called a Totem pole boat loader, you need a hitch and 1 front roof rack, although I have 2
very simple to use, drop the transom in the totem pole clamp system, pick up the bow and walk it around and onto the front rack,
see them listed on Craigslist all the time

i use a totem pole boat loader to put my 12 foot aluminum on my suv. works great

 

I built my own with schedule 40 pipe and key clamps. Works like a dream on my PU. It sits on the main post on my hitch so i can tow my trailer and carry the boat.
