    Default Vic Carrao speaks out!

Chilliwack Progress August 14th...Vic Carrao of the Fraser Valley Giudes Association siad the consequence of the DFO request to avoid BB on the Fraser to avoid Sockeye could be devastating for anglers and guides."It's ridiculous. In the past the recreational has always taken the high road on issues such as conservation," he said "What were suggesting is coming up with a set definition for Sockeye fishing which could be BB with a leader in excess of one meter fo example."So when concerns come up,they would say,No Sockeye fishing." That takes the politics out of it and makes it crystal clear." Carrao says BB is a legitimate fishing method widely used across North America."If leader length is the issue, lets define as such. But this is not about conservation one bit."They're trying to say we need every Sockeye to get through, but how does that explain the lack of enforcement on illegal drift netting that we still see going on from Mission to Hell's Gate?"So how can they come to the recreational community now and ask us to fish selectively and not BB?The sportfishers are always the first ones taken off the river and the first to be asked to modify the way they fish."And we understand that. But we are also a large contributor to the local economy. Our impact is huge but were the last to get opportunities. We believe our impact is neglible on the resource, but were working closely with DFO to make the right management decisions for the future."

"Carrao says BB is a legitimate fishing method widely used across North America"

Unfortunately what is happening on the Fraser is non-selective flossing. Leader length has nothing to do with it. These fish are not biting, and there is no sport in it.

I think it's great that a well known and respected giude on the Fraser river has stepped up to the plate and given the sports fisherman a voice.Someone to lead the way and refute Ernie Crey. Who has now succeded in in his outlandish comments to pressure DFO into closing a section of river to the sporties.Thank you Vic

    well said vic.

The problem is though isthat DFO and government are afraid of the natives, they just wont bring in the proper enforcement to handle the illegal fisihing. If they do the natives setup blockcades and become militant and the DFO and government back down every time to avoid conflict. The natives win and then keep trying to push the limits. Sooner or later this will have to stop and the DFO and government get some backbone and stand up to what is rapidly turnining us non native canadians into second class citizens.

With the power of video and Internet, exsposing this issue would actually be a fairly easy undertaking should anglers be interested, maybe the FVsalmon society would be a interested group, I'll have to bring this up.
