Scissorbill......I don\'t know where you\'re going with this one.
\r\n \r\n

\nIf I came across as an asshat; I apologize.
\n
\nHowever in one post you seemed to extoll the virtue of eyes.
\nIn another you defer to color and action.
\n
\nMy self I think for the most part the eyes add life to the lure and attract us (the lure buying/copying fishing public).
\nThe life we add to the lure to attract the fish is created by the color and action of the lure.
\n
\nSuccessful colors and patterns may differ from region to region as well as due to time of day, time of year, overcast/sunny the depth they\'re fished at etc;
\nUV (IMO) is probably one of the bigger, somewhat new innovations.
\n
\nAction can vary or be varied via leader length, boat speed, flasher/no flasher, the lure itself, moving with or against the tide or cross tide or on the turn or.....
\n
\nWith these and all the other variables out there I hardly think a little black dot added to a lure that is rolling and looping around in water that is for the most part far from clear (especially the deeper it goes); is going to be the trigger that seals the deal.
\nI think it\'s more on how the action, color and pattern are perceived
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nTry to count the number of black dots on the image:
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n...
\n
\n
\n \n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n \r\n As a matter of fact I think many spoon painters are a lot like fly-tyers......they just want to make something, then look at it for hours fantasizing about what a great fishcatcher it will be.......with no thought to why they tied the fly that way or why they used certain colors.
\n
\n Painting a spoon simply for "artwork" doesn\'t guarantee a single thing......(except putting in a lot of time and money).
\n
\n Obviously there are many that actually do it for enjoyment......regardless of the outcome.
\n
\n Fly-tyers often spend untold hours making flies that look nice but never caught jack-crap........whatever turns them on.\r\n \r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\nA rather simplistic view but:
\n
\n I believe new inexperienced fly tiers may start out that way, trying to reinvent the wheel as they learn the art.
\n But there is far more to it than that.
\nIt\'s the experiments that allow you to understand how the different materials work and work together to add a pulse/action
\n (life if you will).
\n
\n Colors and color combinations as well
\n
\n Tie a few flies, or not, (what ever turns you on) and you\'ll see there\'s a bit more to it
\n

\r\n Seafever, I do believe it might be called the dark chocolate mint with scale. I have tried posting the spoon, but have had no luck putting it online. It has been an extremely productive spoon for me. Mike sent it to me last year prior to my trip to Port Hardy and it turned out to be be my go to spoon. The only downside was that even the shakers loved the spoon.\r\n

    \n
    \n
\nMike.....I read a long way back that you use self-etching primer on some spoons.......I do that too, on all my spoon repaints.
    \n
\nWhat I found is:- rather than just spray the self-etch on a shiny metal spoon, I take 150 open-grit paper and sand the shiny surface first so there is no shine left. The primer sticks even better to that. Put coat of primer on and then a coat of Tremclad oil-base white primer later.
    \n
\nEspecially when I want to do a "double-sider"...that is, a spoon that has the same colors both sides instead of one side chrome.
    \n
\nI\'ve done a couple of recent "doublesiders" on smaller spoons......and they worked real good.
    \n
    \n
    \n
\nTfish:- to post pic.......just pick the "insert image\' icon out of the bar above your "post reply"......then browse your pic library (where you have already stored a pic you\'ll use). You have to "open" these until the pic appears in the "browse" box which will appear when you click on "insert image". Then hit upload and wait.
    \n
\nIf pic is too big in content you may have to resize it. Get "Irfanview" for free off net. Good easy program.
    \n
\nYou just lower the content of the pic until it is ok (it tells you in program) and then save in your pic library and use here.
    \n
    \nCheers.......
    \n
    \n
\nalso when you take the original picture , set your camera on a lower pixel setting....the lower the pixel content the more likely it will not need resizing.
    \n
\nMy camera (which now is vintage) has a menu setting for this. I can take x number of pictures at "high quality" or triple the number of pictures at "low quality". Just for a pic on this site you can get by with lowest setting because the pic is small relatively.
    \n
    \n
    \nPic post procedure:-
    \n
    \n(1) click post reply
    \n
\n(2) click "insert image" out of bar on top of box
    \n
\n(3) click " browse files from COMPUTER".....not URL
    \n
\n(4) Click on "library" or "pictures" and click "open"
    \n
\n(5) Find picture and click "open"
    \n
\n(6) When picture appears click "open" and you should see that pic listed in the bottom box of the " browse files" box
    \n
\n(7) Hit "upload" and wait......the box will disappear when it is uploaded and you will either see the pic or the pic info in your "post reply" box.
    \n
    \n
\n ( Add text either before you do this or after
    \n
    \n(9) Click "post reply"
    \n
\n(10) You should now see your post with pic in the forum (provided the pic wasn\'t oversize in content to begin with)\r\n

    \r\n Fever,
    \n
\nI tried self-etching primers. I have access to some real industrial types
\nthanks to the production and metal fab shop at work.
    \n
\nI\'ve used mildly acidic etcing solutions; I\'ve lightly sanded and steel-wooled the blanks..
\nI\'ve tried multiple and various combinations thereof...
    \n
\nFor bulk work it\'s not practical, and-' + '-disappointingly-' + '- it still chips and doesn\'t bond completely.
    \n
\nDrop a thusly painted spoon onto your driveway from hip high...
\nthe paint will chip like a celphone glass.
    \n
\nI now use a one-pass plastic epoxy. Takes about 5 seconds per spoon to apply.
\nBake it-' + '-or several at a time-' + '- in a re-purposed toaster oven for 10 minutes to get it to set and bond
    \nwhile I do something else.
    \n
\nSlick, smooth, ready to add color, and it wont come off with a file.
\n(Or from salmon or lingcod teeth)
    \n

\r\n I revisited an old idea these last few days.
    \n
\nA guide wants some of these, so I used the last 46 blanks from an old purchase.
\nI\'ll get him his 20, and give the rest to fellow lodge guests this July.
    \n
\nI primer blanks, leaving the head and tail areas chrome.
\nIt is intentionally a bit sloppy and uneven. I like that look, and up close, it\'s a very cool look.
    \n
\nDon\'t know exactly why, except that it\'s different-' + '-maybe gives the effect of a distinct head and tail-' + '-
\nand this spoon took a ton of fish the season before last.
    \n
\nWhen I apply the whacky, stinky metal epoxy ink color, it\'s easy to QUICKLY wipe off the chrome part,
\nbut it sticks very well to the plastic baked-on primer.
    \n
\nHOT TIP-' + '-wear sacrificial clothes and surgical gloves when working with heavy duty inks/paints.
    \n
(or you\'ll be tossing nice shirts away, and you\'ll look like one of those fools with tattoos on their hands)
    \n

\nHere are the primered blanks ready for color, each tacked onto a piece of cardboard.

\nThe finished look, still needs a little cleaning up and a few clear coats.

\r\n from page one back a few years, that hammered or hex pattern green spoon might be from Ontario. Looks like a Northern King, maybe. I bought something similar to it, in yellow/green and it was very successful on springs up at the Charlottes.
\n I was bored at work doing shifts at evening ,etc. so I thought why not try making a spoon or two. I gathered thin sheet metal, mostly brass. I made patterns of sport spoons by stripping off the split rings, etc. and using masking tape to make a paper pattern. then apply to the brass and cut out a piece of metal with tin snips. punch holes with the sheetmetal punch hand held machine. Painted with underwater primer, then white marine enamel, then some coloured spray paints overtop. re-attach the hardware.
\n the old gibbs gypsy 3.5 and 2.75 proved successful, as did coyote 3.5, and 5. the sheet metal has to be thin to flutter as these spoon will do, but soon get bent by the fish/ net landing procedures. Fun tho!!!\r\n

\nI buy my blanks from Lakeland, and from Wright-' + '- I don\'t actually make them.
\nCheap offshore crap easily bends out of a usable condition...these US stamped blanks are really sturdy.

\r\n If you don\'t want to do wholesale paint jobs, you can easily tweak/enhance existing lures and spoons with nail polish.
\nLots of colors are available. Just paint with them, let dry COMPLETELY, then clear-coat them with any good gloss clear coat in a spray can.
    \n
\n3 thin coats of clear are way better than one or 2 heavy coats.
    \n
\nDon\'t breathe that stuff-' + '-' + '-hang the lures to dry in a well-ventilated area or on a string-' + '-like a clothesline in your garage.\r\n

\r\n My buddy Steve Whynott is owner/helmsman/guru of Saltwater Cowboys Fishing Charters,
    \nand operates out of Tofino.
    \n
\nHe sent these pics of 24 and 26 lbs chinook taken on my "Jamaican Jolt" and "Sick Boy" spoons.
\nSO good to see them produce!

\r\n Mike, I have a large wonder bread of yours that you sent to me around Christmas and was wondering how it would attract fish. Will give it a try in a couple of weeks when I venture up to Port Hardy. If the coho are in I will target them and see what happens. I would assume that the 3 1/2 and 4" sizes would work best but last year your green, black and white large spoon killed the coho so I should have similar results with the larger wonder bread spoon.
\nI have found that for many fisherman the ability to share in ones knowledge or lack there of brings them as much joy as catching any fish.
\nIt is sometimes difficult to get my wife to understand that the time spent in the garage working on rigging is as enjoyable and exciting as the actual trip you go on.
\nAgain, thanks for sharing your gifts and passion with the fishing community.\r\n

\nThanks for the good vibe Tom. I know you like the gear, and good luck with it.
\nNot enough days in the year to try it all!
\nYup..the garage, or shop, or lab where we spend all the hours rigging is our sanctuary.
    \n
\nIt would be great to see guys post pics of their set-up.
    \nI\'d love to see Nigel\'s, Hmmmm\'s, Nog\'s, yours...
    \n
\nI sent last \'care packages\' to my 2 Washington guys, you and Rick, on the weekend. Should have them soon.
    \n
\nAs much as I like to use meat when going for Hali, don\'t ever be surprised to get one on a spoon like the Wonder Bread. I\'ve got lings with it as well. But -' + '-' + '-lings will take an old shoe if you wiggle it in their face.
    \n
\nI actually got a small (thank GOD) hali while trolling it last year in the Inlet.
\nI hate getting hali on mooching gear.
    \n
\nIn Alaska I hooked a pretty good hali, guessing about 40-50 lbs, and he took all my salmon line and gear to Japan once he saw the boat and gaff.\r\n

\r\n Hey I got a couple from Scott (Canoehead). He and I are going to pull them on Okanagan Lake this winter for some big Rainbows. Just curious as to the one pattern - copper with a slash or red paint at the end- does that represent any bait or just trying something different.\r\n

\r\n BGM...remember the original "Super Duper"?
\nThe "U" shaped trout killer? Gold body, square red head. Google it.
\nSame colors, bigger spoon, bigger fish.
\nWhothehell knows what fish think. We boated 5 spring on it to 23 lbs
\n and one of the nicest coho on the trip, a solid 16 lbs on a version of that.
\n"Bloody Nose" is what I call it. Give it a run. I just got some nice 3.5" blanks.
\nIll do a couple more for trout. I have a winner color for Rocky mountain rainbows...give it a shot in BC.
    \nCheers\r\n

\r\n Damn, damnfish.....that took 2 weeks. I guess never ship over Christmas if you can help it.
    \n
\nI sent some up to the island as well....Tofino, Nanaimo, Bamfield, Gold River.....and further up to Massett.
    \n
\nI am packing up some more and I\'ll heads-up when they post.
    \n
\nGood luck! I hope they produce. Operative already got a few nice winter springs on some at Powell River,

\nSoda Pop (Sprite seems to work best) and baking soda that made the paint do some more cool things.
\nIt spreads without going away altogether.....

\r\n Adding in my THANKS here as well!
\nSpoons showed up yesterday Mike, and they look Tremendous!
    \n
\nI will certainly be giving them a swim when we get back to the WCVI commercial troll this spring. Already know they are going to SMASH them out there! Will report back, and hope to include a few pix...
    \n
\nYour generosity is awesome Buddy! VERY Cool what you are doing for the Fine Folks here!
    \n
\nWork on my needlefish spoon prototype continues. We\'ll be swimming the first version to test for action later this month, then on with the final tweakings. I\'ll fire off a couple to you once I am satisfied with their performance. Methinks you will Like!
    \n
\nLooking Right Forward to testing the ones you sent!!
    \n

\r\n You are all very welcome. I have another batch coming and will send a few more along.
    \n
\nAnybody on this forum, -' + '-' + '-hockey takes and battles along the boards aside, that\'s over THERE, this is over HERE-' + '-' + '-this is fishing here, any of you are welcome to a few if you send me a PM.
\nI have no issues with any members of this forum. I have some good friends as a favourable by-product of finding it last year.
    \n
\nI intend to only continue to paint spoons that have gotten some action, so your reports are eagerly anticipated, and very much appreciated.
    \n
\nThanks for all the input, tips, and direction I have gotten from you all.
    \nIf they work, I\'ll keep \'em comin\'!

    \n
\nI read something somewhere to the effect of:
    \n
\n"Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day.
\nBut give a man spoons to catch his own fish, and he\'ll buy you a beer".

    \nNo worries. I made a ton of \'em.
\nI wanted to have them out all over Alaska and Washington, Vancouver Island, QC.
    \n
\nI have never fished for salmon in winter, so that\'s a whole new world for me.
\nFrom what I gather here, you go deeper, and it\'s a whole different ballgame.
    \n
\nSure different than sitting around on deck in July, wearing shorts and flipflops, sipping icy cold beers!

\r\n I can\'t take nearly as much credit for these looks as gravity, chemistry, and Mother Nature deserve.
    \nIt all just kinda happens.
    \n
\nAs cool as these look, they are really a snap.
    \n
\nI paint the chrome blanks with a White Rust-Oleum paint, right out of the spray can.
\nI\'ll do 20-30 at a time, and let them dry at least overnight.
    \n
\nOnce I apply the color to the white base coat, the entire painting process per spoon takes only about
\n15-30 seconds, or a minute max if it\'s 2 color.
    \n
\nI can crank them out pretty easily now.
    \n
\nIf you lose them and want a replacement, all I can guarantee is that it will be similar.
    \n
\nThe way the chemistry reacts with the paint is very random, but I can get pretty close.
    \n
\nThanks for all the great PMs, enthusiasm and support!\r\n

\r\n Mikey.....you certainly are getting some kinda cool results with the "chemistry" your dabbling with.
    \n
\nAs others have said I am sure some of those will work pretty darn well in different locales up here. I\'ll certainly be giving the ones you hand delivered a whirl when the time comes.
    \n
\nI may have missed it earlier in the thread but have you figured out a way to add a "glow" effect to them?\r\n

    \r\n
    \nAh Scotty....
    \n
    \nThanks Pal.
    \n
\nHere\'s where I need some help.
\n(The yellow is fluorescent, but not "glow")
    \n
\nWould you suggest a white glow base coat that would show through between the extra colors?
\nOr perhaps a stripe of glow on the back...the chrome side with no interference from the colors?
    \n
\nI could try both, but I have a feeling that once I top coat a white glow base coat, (as substituted for the Rust-Oleum paint)
\nadd color, then chemistry, that the \'glow\' might be somewhat compromised...or at the very least minimized.
    \n
\nDoes it makes sense at all to add glow to the back side
    \n
\nIf I put a glow strip on the back, then it would be half glow, half chrome-' + '-' + '-perhaps kinda cool....
    \n
\nI\'m sending DF a few of these for you and B also.\r\n

    \r\n D,
    \n
\nI am back from Eastern Canada now.
\nGot a second airbrush and a dual manifold for the compressor so I can quickly do 2-color.
    \n
\nI found a killer new look using different thicknesses of paint and some more awesome chemistry,
\nso you will get some from the first run.
    \n
\nWife doing an all-babe snowmobile thang tomorrow, so I get to paint away in peace!
\nThey hate when the guys try to lead the way, and bark orders, etc., so off they go.
    \n
\nThey can handle the big sleds with the best of \'em.
    \n
    \nCheers Bud.\r\n

      James---it's a lot of fun, you're right.

I buy my blanks from Lakeland, and from Wright-- I don't actually make them.
Cheap offshore crap easily bends out of a usable condition...these US stamped blanks are really sturdy.

I work for an engineering/manufacturing company and I have access to all
kinds of bullet-proof industrial high-heat coatings and engine paints that the average hobbyist would
have to really work at to source.

I paint from Thanksgiving to about May--I did around 3500 this last season.
