well we got out at the crack of dawn thinkimg the launch was going to be a zoo since the langley launch was closed...
well it was a great day the weather man was wrong again a the day was beautiful,,the fish was great..until we had to go home hit the boat launch it was packed with boat waiting to get out.so dropped the truck driver off to go get the trailer for the boat got the boat out ,,was driving by a few of them gave a wave and one said something so we stopped to ask wait he said ,,thats when all hell broke out and my day was instantly ruined by a f-en guy that didn't know what he was talking about..you see we were out a few weeks ago and witnessed a wrong procedure of a fish handling and the guy we were with took pic's and the friend did his thing with the info he had but all this a-hole remembered was the guy with the yellow custom weld not the other boats that were there ..he was threating to sue us for posting pic's on the net about this which we didn't ..and he just won't let it go and neither did the spouse and who would the guy was out of line totally he should have let this go he was totally in the wrong he should have been ashamed of himself and the way he handled the sturgeon insead he wanted to verbally abuse us so there i am stuck listening to this for about 10 minutes...
and guides wonder why they get bad name prime example of bad publicity..we now know who this guy is and who he works for so now there is two outfit that we sure in the hell would not recomend to anyone..and let me tell you working in the goverment job i get to mingle with alot of people that ask all the time for referals..
Wow........... that sucks. He shud be worrying about his fish handling skills instead of who's watching him. Pls PM me which companies that you won't recommend so i don't make a mistake
Yeah you'd think someone who had just been proven to be MISHANDLING the Sturgeon - would shut his face! For someone who was in the WRONG like he most definitely was..... You wouldnt think he would want MORE attention drawn to himself : I guess hes a real professional.....
But you cant put all the guides in that box... there ARE good ones out there...
I think he just shat on what was a done deal and escalated what was all but quieted down. Some guys just don't get it how the internet works.:2cents: He is not helping the hard working ethical guides images. This guy was tagging sturgeon and should have known better.
FOCB
the guy is an idiot, you can't sue for something like that. He is in a public space, you can take all the photos you want and post them on the internet.
Either way, you should post the photo now just to piss him off, lol.
The pics were posted on a closed forum after Vic @ STS was contacted to see if he knew who this person was. Originally Vic responded that he did not know who the person was and that the person did not work for him.
Once the person was identified, Vic talked to the fellow informing him that how he was handling the fish, while maybe not illegal, was certainly considered not ethical. It is believed the sturgeon was foul hooked, but because fishing was slow, it was tail-roped and then towed to shore at a fair speed backwards where it became the centre of client trophy photo pics for the next 15 minutes.
Since the person in question has been talked to by Vic, and I believe also by DFO, there is no reason to post the pictures here even though that could be done. My aim was not to disgrace or defame the individual involved, but to make sure this practice does not continue unchecked.
According to Vic this person was sorry and and remorse regarding his actions. He even provided Vic his email and phone number in case I wanted to contact him and discuss the matter further. This was not done as I felt the matter was over and done with. Any sign of remorse or any sense of responsibility was certainly not shown the other day when this altercation took place. My appologies to Minnow and Lips for that.
It amazes me that other guides did nothing during this altercation ……. Just watched. One has even stated on the forum that “this person is a Guide in question is a good guy, responsible angler and just a little out of tune with how Sturgeon should be handled, I'm sure he will not repeat this mistake”. Not too sure on how accurate that assessment is given his latest actions.
While you are correct that posting the pics here would not be grounds for legal action my intention was, and still is, not to cause issue regarding guides or this person in particular ....... but to protect this unique fish and fishery. I'm certain any judge would just roll on the floor laughing his a$$ off if it was brought before him. I guess what happens further depends on the actions of this individual.
Would I report someone again ........ you bet!! Would I care that the person being reported is a guide or not …………. Hell no!!
Would I post pics, if needed, to identify the person so that his actions can be stopped ........ right again!!

You bet GOFISH, If that guide decided he wanted to beak off after he was talked to by Vic, that tells me he wasn't remorseful. I feel some of these so called guides (like the one in question) don't care about the fishery at all. It is idiots like this that will get this fishery shut down in a couple of years. What a clown. Good on you pal, you got away with an infraction and talked to by a sturgeon legend about the way to handle a fish and you decide you want to start something with someone who brought your actions to light? You are a real winner aren't you? Oh and if you are reading this post you can pm me and we can discuss this matter in person if you would like because you don't seem to have learned anything from Vic.
You say what he did was "technically" not illegal...but wasn't tailing sturgeon made just that, illegal a liitle while ago?
I myself have witnessed highly questionable actions by guides on 3 occasions in just the last week. I think there are getting to be way too many guide boats out there, and especially certain ones that are OBVIOUSLY in it for the quick buck and care little for the fish.
To tail rope a sturgeon with the intent of towing it backwards to shore while certainly unethical depends on whether the action caused damage or there was intent to molest the fish. Since a sturgeon, or other fish, never swims backwards, and it would be assumed that such an action would cause damage to the vertebrate of the fish. DFO would certainly consider this action as one that could / would cause damage and it would be a regulation violation.
In a situation where the fish was being tagged and / or pictures were being taken and an appropriate soft rope or other appropriate restraint device was being used to control the tail as to prevent physical damage or personal injury ......... the response was that they would not view such an action as a regulation violation. As long as there is no towing, hanging or other major force applied with the rope.
One must remember ......... Only the courts can define what is legal and / or illegal. Till that tiime, like driving a vehicle, it can only be thought of as an offense.
very well stated GoFish very well stated I can give you a big star for that one , and one must think of your wording as it has great revelance to such a fact well done.
I also believe this guide in question does steelhead brood stock on one of the systems. I wonder how his actions will affect his ability to continue with that.
You are absolutely right Steelie. Guides like this don't give two hoots about the fishery. All they care about is the money & nothing about sustainability.
"Good Guy not up with handling methods"...thats ridiculous. If you are a guide you have a responsibility to be up to date with everything going on in your fishery...ESPECIALLY issues regarding sustainability like this.
Good to see the guy got called out on it. Now hopefully he becomes a man, takes his lumps, and changes his methods!
you know what ..... guides are people as well.... they make mistakes once in a while as well.... a few days ago I witnessed another guide company towing a fish by the tail that was hooked in the tail....instead of running off to forums I contacted the owner of the guide company and let him know what I saw... he was greatful and said he would deal with the issue.... no need for pictures on forums....I am sure had people contacted the guide in question before posting pictures on forums... this would have all been dealt with in a respectful manner....
but if pictures of myself were posted all over the internet before someone contacted me about an issue they had with me I would be on the deffensive as well....knowing the guide personally and only live 2 minutes from him I can say he is a stand up guy that doesnt have interest in hurting or mistreating sturgeon... he has 5 mouths to feed at home is is one of the best guys I have met....why would he jeoporadize his chance of providing for his family....

Hey Thomas, I realize that guides are people as well and if you read my post I wasn't generalizing all guides. I said that most of them are really great people. It is the few that make their colleagues look bad at times because MOST people generalize. I can understand that you know this guy and want to stick up for him and that is admirable. I don't believe that Gofish had any intentions other than finding out who this guy was to be able to contact him or his employer to let him know that the way he handled this fish was down right wrong and almost lethal for it. With him being a guide I can respect that he wants to be able to give his clients the best experience he can and would want them to get pictures of the fish because it was an awesome fish, but as a guide he should be up to date on what is acceptable and what is not. Also he should have his ID#'s on his boat or the company he works for so someone could contact the company like you say you did the other day.
I can see his point about having pictures of himself on a forum getting him upset, but he should not have confronted the original poster the way he did in public. All he had to do was get in touch with the poster and just admitt that he was wrong and did not know that what he did wasn't kosher but he didn't. He chose to go right at the guy at the launch and that was the wrong thing to do because this situation was all but dead, but what he did caused it to flare up again. The people on here are not guide haters, they are really good forgiving people who care about the fish and the sport very deeply. No one on here wants to see the fishery shut down but if there are more and more incidents like this then that is exactly what will happen and then all of us, guides included will not be able to fish for these magnificent fish.
Maybe, since you know this guy you can get him in touch with Gofish or Lips2 to be able to have them talk to each other and then this thread can be removed because it really is just rehashing an old incident everytime someone comments on it and I am sure both parties in question would like to have this all put behind them.
The pictures were not posted in "forums" or "all over the internet" Thomas and Vic was contacted first to see if he knew who this guide was. When Vic responded that he didn't know who it was, the pics were posted on a "members only sturgeon fishing forum" so that this type of treatment would stop. That was my only intention. They were not plastered all over inner space as your comments suggest.
I have not written anything negative about this individual as a person. His action the other day was certainly not called for. That was not defensive ....... that is offensive!! Certainly his own handling of this situation has drawn way more attention to this matter and made it a way bigger issue than what was intended.
Unlike your situation, the person or what guiding company he worked for was not known. Perhaps if he had numbers or the company name on his boat rather than display no ID that could have been avoided.
It's pretty easy to sit back and judge now ........ hindsight is 2020.
Hi all lets take the high road now and stop bashing folks, as the point has bin made and the statment spoken. lets leave the ball in his court and hopfuly it will end right her and now.
thanks for your suport on this matter . minomasher & lips2
