Well, just got back from a month trip around Vancouver Island. I spent a couple weeks in Barkley Sound (Toquart Bay area), a week at Alder Bay (Telegraph Cove area) and a week down south on Galiano Island. I did mostly Salmon fishing in Barkley Sound and bottom fishing in the other areas. I had a great trip as far as vacation goes, but the fishing overall was grim.

The Salmon fishing in Barkley Sound was the worst of any trip I've ever had. Most of the good fishing was off shore. We had problems with the main engine, so weren't comfortable taking it outside. If we had the chance to fish the banks probably we would have done much better.

Telegraph has been devoid of Salmon all year according to the Island reports. We knew that before going up, but thought we'd do OK on the Halibut. Wrong, Halibut fishing was very slow also. I landed one for the weeks fishing. I've never fished there for Halibut in Sept before. I think I'll stick to earlier in the year as June seems far better there.

I just went to the Gulf Islands for a change. I was getting tired of the fog, and was hoping for a little more sun. I did a little bottomfishing for Ling there. A lot of the better areas have been RCA'd, so fished a few other spots.
The ling are still around, but not in the size or numbers of past trips.

Overall I'd say the Salmon fishing was very poor, bottom fishing, seen better. I had a great time with the buds, but a few more fish would have been nice too. Oh well, I think I'm off to the interior to see what some trout look like.

Ya, I got some rockfish. I try to avoid them, with a one fish daily limit in most parts. I usualy fish water over one hundred feet deep, so releasing them doesn't work well from deep water. Overall numbers and size of rockfish is definitely getting smaller though.
