What kind of bait loop are you making? The kind that cinches up tight to the eye that is suitable for holding yarn or roe bags or the one that is for securing roe and skein? The latter is harder to tie and can end up crooked. Have you tried some of the videos on you tube? They might help. I think it comes down to practice.

That's a really good idea if you find your fingers getting numb, which of course causes them to slip. Also, have all your leaders pre-tied. It's good practice before you have to do one on a cold river bank.

Also, Big Green Machine is right, tie them at home first, then bring them with you.

Also, Army Navy store had some pretied ones, cheap.
