For the past 3 season's, the larger runs of winter steelhead have been appearing in February. Yes, there are a few about as early as mid to late December, but January has been a trickle compared to what happens in the next month. Last year, 65-70% of the winters me and my local crew hooked were well into February.

Wasn't always that way, as I remember a few spectacular January's years back, but about 3 or 4 years ago they started to trend towards later on. Now it very much appears the largest component of the run is skewed towards a later entry into the system.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,
Nog

In your own words "Ayup," that makes sense and we will likelyplan accordingly at which time I will touch bases with you and see how the Van Isle boys stack up against the Mainlanders.......Thanks, 'Nog.......Ortho 8)

I use to make the yearly pilgramage to the STOMP on boxing day, always had good success, with some years being dynamite. It was a good start to the season and as our LM fish usually arrived in numbers in early January it filled the gap.
Too bad to hear the early run is down in numbers, but seems my friends who've been over this year have been finding some decent pods of early chrome, lets hope it's this way on the mainland as well.
The early LM fish have been showing well the last few seasons, lets hope that continues.

This is a bit of a hi jack, sorry, but I also miss our yearly trip to the Gold in febuary, this was before crowding started and we had some great days on that absolutely beautiful river. Is it really suffering as badly as some would claim, or is it more of a situation of having to work hard for fish, because I like challenging fishing.

Gonna have to hit the Island this season, it's been too long since my last visit and just looking at all the rivers as you drive along gets the blood flowing.

Had a couple of good days on the Gold last year. The poor results seemed to start the same time that Luna the celebrity whale decided that was a great place to live and damage boats. Some of my friends who get to fish that flow on a real regular basis feel that with the demise of Luna, the fishing should start to return to normal. We will see if they are right.

Steelhead fishing has actually been something of a rather pleasant suprise this year! A nice run of earlies wandered in following that deluge (when town was absolutely flooded) riding in on the high water that created. Been out a few times between hunting forays, and have already managed to bring 18 to hand thus far! Suprising given the later returns of the last couple of years. Hope that means we're in for a good run this winter!! Still loads of summers around, almost to the point of being a nusiance at times

HotRod: Heard about the jet getting pinned on the rock at the Confluence. Took 2 of the big jets with heavy wire most of the next day to haul her free. You (and the rest of the crew) are certainly Lucky!! Could have been a LOT worse! Guess that Fella was having a bad week... Also heard he slammed one of the trucks (with rig in tow) into the ditch earlier in the week. Hope he gets the third strike out of his system before your return!!

Tight Lines!

Thanks Noggin! Should be good to go and I was glad that nothing important was lost except $400 worth of gear and two days work. They're making it up to me though. A class outfit for sure!
