Coho on the fly

6065 Views 24 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  young gun
Does anyone experienced in fly fishing for coho have any tips, places, patterns, reports or anything for me? I've never been and as soon as I get my new rod and reel I'd like to head out.
Preferably in the lower mainland or lower Fraser Valley.

Thanks to anyone willing to help. :peace:

When do coho start moving in on the Harrison?
the vedder is good down low as moving coho will take a fly more readily then anything else

not to mention those pinks are retarded :) and bite anything

and YG is right chehalis isnt good to fly fish unless you get to the mouth preferably by boat

You mean down in the canal? And when do they start coming in?

I seen guys get quite a few of them a the dewdney slough, and just down from there you can go to suicide creek (Norish area)
Lots of space on the vedder you just need waders to get away from the gong show
well i heard that there is a few coho in the hatchery already but i wouldnt see it pick up till mid september and my first coho on the Vedder was sept25th a couple yrs back actually got 2that day. pinks should be there in decent numbers by the long weekend or at least im hoping as there has been good numbers of tham moving up past Fort langley area jumping rolling everywhere.

and yes i mean in the canal of course lost of gorgeous fly water down there just get there early and come in numbers to keep the gear guys away a bit to give you room. if you know what your doing then YES you can fly fish with gear guys all around which i have done before many times and tend to piss them all off as i catch more fish.

regarding the Nicomen Slough (Dewdney slough) is good in November all month and if the slough is being now so good then just go to the Norrish (suicide) creek as thats where all the slough fish are heading.

rolled muddlers work well in the slough especially if you know how to tie you can add certain things to the fly to make it "pop" out more than others which will do you very well. as i was there one day i fished next to a guy getting more fish than me fishing the same fly HOWEVER he had tied his with a little bit of bright orange at the head and the fish loved it cause it was different.

last year in Norrish the HOT fly was a bright pink muddler the coho just loved it and hit it HARD!!!

if you want a good spot on the slough just pm me as there is alot of fishable water but i found a great spot that the locals know very well

The stave is also a good place. Toss your fly into the frog water. Those ares are your best bet and usually only the fly tossers fish those spots making it relativly quiet. Biggest for me out of the stave last year was at 14lbs. I got that one on a merci blue pattern. Also got them on blue-red-green christmas tree, blue rolled muddler minnow as well as a little green meany.
Yeah I can't wait to target Coho on the fly this year for the first time! I think I caught the bug, or perhaps a fly! I can't seem to stop thinking about fly fishing!

How do you present those flies for Coho. Swing, drift, retrieve, other?? does it depend on the type of water you are fishing.

What techniques do you use?

Thanks in advance for any info.
This is my first post, long time lurker.

Just bought my first flyrod, 8wt (Dragonfly) so looking forward to countless hours fishing with it.

Thanks for all the tips from this forum. Much appreciated from a Newbie.
