Fished the Stave today just down from the Dam. First hour no luck but saw lots of Chum rising and rolling. Saw a guy casting blades so stopped to watch as he was hooking lots of fish. Helped him land several and after his prompting decided to start chucking flies again. Mike, that guy, gave me some good tips so I loaded up a natural Zonker and first cast fish on. Fought for awhile but lost it. Great feeling though to have a fish that big on the fly. Long story short ended up with lots of hook ups, one big guy snapping my 13 pound tippet off. Finally landed my last hook up at closing time, a nice ten pound male. Too dark to keep though so I let him go. Must remember to take the camera next time.

What a great day. Thanks again Mike if you read this.

Sounds like a great day!! Always interesting to hear the different reports from the same piece of water. I was there for a good chunk of the day and caught nothing using the same methods you just described.

It really was awesome to have that power on the fly rod. Definatley a learning experience though as to bringing them in. No I did not tie the flies myself but Mike did offer a couple of flies that he thought I should try that he tied and they really worked. I felt bad though losing the one after the monster snapped it off but he didn't seem to mind at all and offered me another. I think it won't be too much longer until I start tying my own. It's great to know that there are guys out there that really want to help, I agree that's what it is all about.

Now I can hardly wait for the Coho run

I took my first salmon on the fly last year.  It was a big old chum, really nice condition for the smoker though.  That was a real turning point for me.  Prior to that, I used to go fishing with 'split brain' syndrome (bring the fly and drift kits both).  Too much schlepping gear around.  Now, I don't even bring the drift kit to the river.  I've been out a few times this year and nothing to show for it, but for some reason, it just doesn't matter :) :)  I find i can hike much easier without all that extra lead in my pack too!  Getting away from the beer drinking, smoke littering, cranky crowds is MUCH easier when all you've got is an 8wt, a pack of tippets, a spool of leader and a box of flys (and any snacks you care to drop in your pack) :)  You're set for a day of hunting and truly enjoying one of the finest activities anyone could do.  I say hunting because for me, one of the most enjoyable parts of the outing is exploring stretches that, because they are not "Park'nFish" destinations, get left completely alone.  They my not have the big holding pools where the gravel digs are and maybe you have to scramble over a few trees and rocks but man can you find some incredible water out there.  Welcome to the 'Bug' ;)

I've still got the split brain... Glad to hear it will be cured soon. Cheers!
