Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0628-RECREATIONAL - Salmon - Area 23 - Alberni Inlet - Update

Recreational salmon harvesters in Alberni Inlet are advised that the gill net
fleet will be operating 24 hours per day in upper Alberni Inlet (Areas 23-1 and
23-2) inside Sproat Narrows from Monday, August 9, to Thursday, August 12. The
seine fleet will operate in a similar area continuously from 12:00 hours
Tuesday, August 10 to 18:00 hours, Thursday, August 12.

There have been incidents of recreational fishing vessels colliding with
actively fishing gill nets. Nets are marked with coloured marker buoys that may
be difficult to see in rough water conditions. In order to ensure safe
operations for all, recreational vessel operators are requested to slow down
and maintain safe speeds when operating or transiting areas in the vicinity of
active commercial net fleets.
