Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0773-Salmon: Seine, Gill Net, and Troll - Areas B, D, & H - Areas 14 to 19 - Mid Vancouver Island Chum - Update

The Chum Working Group met by conference call on October 16, 2008 to review
stock status information and discuss any potential chum fishing opportunities
for the coming week.

Area 14
Escapement estimates to date are as follows:
Puntledge River - 1,500 chum with a target of 60,000.
Little Qualicum River - 500-600 chum with a target of 130,000.
Big Qualicum River – less than 100 with a target of 100,000 chum.

It is still early for these three systems and these levels are within the
normal range for this time of year.

Fisheries for this week are planned to target the anticipated strong and early
return to the Puntledge River. Gill net fisheries have been scheduled to be
staggered with Johnstone Strait chum openings.

The gill net fishery as described in fishery notice FN0752 will open as
scheduled in the upper portion of Area 14 at 16:00 Thursday, October 16, 2008
until 16:00 Saturday, October 18, 2008.

The earliest possible gill net opening next week is 09:00 Monday October 20/08,
this will be confirmed on Friday October 17/08 in the pm once catch information
from the previous opening is assessed. This opening will likely be for 24
hours with the possibility of an extension based on the progression of
escapement into the Puntledge River.

The troll fishery remains open until further notice in the upper portion of
Area 14 as described in fishery notice FN0753.

Area 16
Commercial fishing opportunities are not expected in 2008 due to low forecast
levels of abundance however, assessments will continue.

Area 17
The Nanaimo River escapement estimate is approximately 17,000-20,000 chum to
date, with a target of 60,000 chum. Assessment of the area will continue and
an update will be provided on Tuesday October 21/08. No commercial fisheries
are planned for Area 17 at this time.

Area 18
The Didson sonar assessment on the Cowichan River is scheduled to commence
during the week of October 20/08. No commercial fisheries are planned for Area
18 at this time.

Area 19
Assessments on the Goldstream River have commenced, and the estimate is
approximately 1,100 chum to date. Assessment of the area will continue. No
commercial fisheries are planned for Area 19 at this time.

The next chum working group meeting is scheduled for Thursday October 23, 2008.
An update regarding further fishing opportunities will follow this call.
