Subject: FN0784-Salmon: Gillnet - Area D - Area 14 - Mid Vancouver Island - Chum - Reopening
The Chum Working Group met by conference call on October 16, 2008 to review
stock status information and discuss any potential chum fishing opportunities
for the coming week.
Escapement estimates as reported yesterday are as follows:
Puntledge River - 1,500 chum with a target of 60,000.
Little Qualicum River - 500-600 chum with a target of 130,000.
Big Qualicum River – less than 100 with a target of 100,000 chum.
It is still early for these three systems and these levels are within the
normal range for this time of year.
Fisheries for this week are planned to target the anticipated strong and early
return to the Puntledge River. Gill net fisheries have been scheduled to be
staggered with Johnstone Strait chum openings.
The gill net fishery that opened in Area 14 on Thursday October 16/08 will
close as scheduled at 16:00 Saturday October 18/08. There are approximately
sixteen vessels participating in the current opening so far and preliminary
catch levels are low. Weather conditions have hampered fishing activity.
Gill nets will reopen for 24 hours at 09:00 Monday October 20/08 to 09:00
Tuesday October 21/08 in Subareas 14-9, 14-10, and that portion of Subarea 14-
11 outside the Comox Bar, northeasterly of a line from Longbeak Point on Denman
Island, to a fishing boundary sign on Willemar Bluffs.
Variation Order 2008-D-GN-Qualicum-02.
This fishery may be extended based on escapement, catch levels, and/or poor
weather conditions. The next announcement will be Monday, October 20/08 in the
pm.
NOTES:
The target species for this fishery is chum salmon. Pink salmon may also be
retained. There is non-retention of sockeye, coho, chinook and steelhead.
Minimum mesh size 149 mm (5 and 7/8 in). Maximum depth 90 meshes. Maximum
hang ratio 3:1. Corkline to web distance minimum 0 cm maximum 2 m.
Fishers are reminded that the half-mile radius boundary on Fillongley Creek
will be in effect.
Fishers must have a valid 2008/2009 Salmon Area D licence, complete with
Conditions of 2008/2009 Salmon Area D Licence.
At the end of each fishing day prior to 08:00h of the next day, the vessel
master must, as a condition of licence, record their catch information in their
Salmon Log Book and report their catch by calling 1-888-387-0007.
All vessels participating in this fishery must have a revival tank in operating
order that meets the standards and is operated in the manner described in the
Conditions of 2008/2009 Salmon Area D Licence.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada is interested in reports of sea turtles in BC
waters. By documenting sightings we are able to learn more about how, when, and
where these turtles are using our waters. If you see a sea turtle, please call
this toll-free phone number: 1-866-I SAW ONE (1-866-472-9663) or e-mail
[email protected]. Please include information such as the type of sea
turtle seen (i.e. leatherback), the location, and time of sighting.
Fishers are requested to avoid fishing among birds and not to run the line if
birds are near the net. Fishers are requested to retain all dead birds which
are entangled and to release live and unharmed birds by placing them in the
water. Please check all birds for metal bird bands (rings) on the leg. If a
bird is banded please contact Doug Bertram with the band number and capture
date and location at 1 250-363-6735 or by the email below. Handle birds with
gloves, double bag dead birds and label each bird with date, time, and location
and store them on ice. Please call your local charter patrol to organize pick-
up or drop them off at a local DFO office. Alternatively, please send
photographs of birds with a reference object such as a coin, and the date, time
and location to [email protected]. Your names and vessel names do not need
to be identified or included.
The next chum working group meeting is scheduled for Thursday October 23/08.
