Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN1030-Recreational: Salmon Aboriginal Economic Fishing Opportunity - Region 2 - Lower Fraser Area

An economic fishery for First Nations using beach seines has been authorized in
the Fraser River from the Port Mann Bridge to Hope Bridge to target Fraser
River Chum salmon from 08:00h to 16:00h Tuesday October 22, to Thursday October
24, 2013 with the possibility of an extension.

Beach seine fishing provides aboriginal communities a selective means of
harvesting abundant stocks of salmon for economic purposes while allowing less
abundant non-target species to be released with least possible harm.

During this time frame, the following are some safety considerations for those
engaged in recreational and aboriginal fishing.

Please be cautious of the wash from heavy transport vessels as the wash can
destabilize a wading angler. Also be aware that while beach seine operators are
careful to ensure the fishing zone is clear of people and other vessels before
deploying their gear, once deployed, a beach seine and the towing vessel has
limited control and may be unable to avoid small craft in their path.

Conversely, when operating another vessel in the vicinity of a beach seine
crew, please slow down and pass at a safe distance, as your wake can
destabilize fishing crews wading out to retrieve their nets and can flood
heavily-loaded transport vessels.

The Fraser River Peacemakers are also reminding all fishers to be aware of the
dangers of the river environment, wear your PFD’s and look out for your safety
and the safety of others who are fishing near you on the river.
