Fraser Valley report for the week of June 27, 2008

Trout fishing has been slower than normal for this time of year although we are getting some nice fish in the 2 to 5 lb range, numbers have been down from this time last year. Average size of the Bull Trout has been a bit smaller but we have had some nice rainbows and cutthroat. Hopefully we see a few more fish enter the rive this week. The good news is that the water is in great shape and with the hot spell we are expecting, we could see this fishery extended into mid July.

Most of our fish have been caught on streamer fly’s but we have also have done well on Gibbs Ultra Lures and crocs. You can visit our website fly pattern gallery at http://www.guidebc.com/flypatterns.asp and for Gibbs Lures visit http://www.gibbsfishing.com/products/croc.asp

Salmon Fishing Report

The Fraser River is now open to salmon fishing for Chinook Salmon. The limit is the same as every year, 1 fish per day but this year there is a size restriction from June 16 to August 8 of 1 fish under 77 cm which is approximately a 15 lb Chinook.

Although most years the majority of fish we catch in June/July are between 12 to 20 lbs, this year the majority of fish are 3 and 4 year olds which will mean that most of the Chinook caught will be between 10 to 16 lbs which will be keeper size. The good news is that the larger Chinook will be the late summer run which will be after the August 8th restriction. We are also expecting a record return of Harrison River Chinook in mid to late September of 200,000 fish, which will offer some incredible angling opportunities for both gear and fly fishers.

Sturgeon fishing has been nothing short of excellent this past week, Tom and Ryan are both pulling in record numbers for this time of year. Yesterday Tom landed 2 fish over 6 ft and several fish in the 4-5 ft and a bunch of smaller fish. The bad news is one fish got decided he didn’t like Tom and gave him a nice head but in the nose which as you can imagine, didn’t tickle. We are on the water every day so if your wanting to catch some sturgeon, give us a shout.

If you're looking to get out onto the water over the next month, sturgeon fishing is one fishery you should give a try. We are starting to fill up for dates for September, October and November so if you are planning on fishing with us during peak season, book soon to not be disappointed.

Vedder River
Closed to fishing until July 1st when it re-opens for Chinook season.

Vancouver Saltwater Report

The local saltwater fishing has started to show so some signs of life after a real slow spell throughout March and early April. Fishing for chinook/king salmon has been decent off the south end of Bowen Island and the outer reaches of Vancouver Harbour. The average size of the legal fish is getting bigger as well. The fish are averaging in the
10-15 pound range with the odd larger one. A local charter boat picked up a 31 pound chinook off Point Grey on April 12. The fish are starting to show a preference for anchovies. We have been having our success on the downriggers from 50-130 feet. Crabbing has continued to be great in the harbour as well. Crab traps are dropped on every fishing trip.
