Drove out to the 'wack on Thursday night and after enduring the intermittant snoring (what sounded like and elephant) from the room next door for most of the night, I was on the river at first light at Borden Creek, along with several others..Fortunately for me, two guys went downriver while I went upriver to a newly carved piece of likely looking water. It looked so good and without any other competition, I spent most of the morning there, working this long run from top to bottom twice.
The most appetizing steelhead menu for the day in no particular order consisted of:
a) three tone wool and Jensen eggs, painstakingly prepared to perfection
b) wool and pink roe bags, individually wrapped and stored at 36 degrees
c) two tone wool and red cured roe(Hotrod's special)
d) size 14 metallic 'glo' (with my secret add on's)
e) size 4 hammered brass/silver colorado blade, homemade and always deadly!
f) Ortho's "go to" when nothing else works
g) Oh yeah, I also threw a big pink worm for awhile (still havn't caught a steelhead on one)
After spending the better part of five hours in a half mile of river without a single take, I had to accept defeat, (unlike our Jr. team who entertained me via the walkman).
A quick call to FishFinder to report on the non action on the river (never saw or heard of a fish) I decided to head back to Maple Ridge and spend a few hrs. in some very familiar water and the home of my first steelie of the year a few weeks ago. Five casts and bam! fish on!
Now, this fish was not large by any means, and no match for the new Berkley lightweight. After a bunch of quick flips a small cutty in the 12 inch range was gently released back to the river.. Two more hrs of absolutely nothing, and I was ready to take on the Friday night traffic...Figure that fish was about $12.00 an inch!!
Now I gotta wait 'til the 12th.............
