Going to be drifting the Stamp in a week or so and was just wondering if I put in at Falls pool and want to drift to the gun club do I have to take out at the bucket and portage or is there a channel around it? Have heard its pretty nasty. Also is the bucket quite visible from a distance? Sorry for the ignorance just want to be safe, going for a dunk in the stamp in October wouldnt be fun Im sure...

Cheers

There is no side channel around the bucket. I have seen guys go down it. I guess it all depends on your expierience. In october, if the rains come, the Stamp should be at a decent level and the bucket should be fairly raging. I myself would portage around it. It's a tough go with a jet boat. You really have to know these high rapids well. What rock is where? sort of thing. If it is really high portage for sure as it is really nasty then!

Good luck!

At the present water level, it can be run with EXPERIENCED pontooners and rafters. It doesn't sneak up on you, as you can see the drop in the water level and hear it from quite a distance..You can portage around a bit easier in low water, but as others said, if the water is up into the trees, it is not a place to be.
Getting in to the shoreline is tough, because of the trees that almost grow out of the river along there.
There are some low water hazards there as well, with sharp rocks, stumps, and sharp drops that bottom out quickly. This time of the year, be prepared for some shore heckling as well. cause there are a lot of guys out.
If you are travelling with people who know the river, and you know YOUR craft and you have whitewater experience, you will be ok. Be prepared to get wet and tie down all your gear, and WEAR A PFD!.....Ortho 8)

Thanks Ortho, Thought it would be a decently easy drift but apparently not??? Might just have to hoof it on foot. What about the drift from the gun club to arrowvale campground, would the lower be any easier??? Could care less about getting heckled but would like to be careful as I dont have a ton of drifting experience....

Thanks

Let me put this to you another way....Two years ago,at the confluence of the Sproat/Stamp I noticed a guy in a 'toon floating down the Stamp with another 'toon (upside down) in tow.. I asked hime if everybody was ok, and he said his buddy got wet and climbed out of the river. Then he asked me "how far is it to the Paper Dam?".......Scout out your put ins and take outs carefully and from the gun club down you should be ok.
