I'm a river guy too, and I planed a trip to Port Renfrew on July long weekend. This will be my first time out there. My Buddy, who is taking me out there says its awsome for Hali's out on the banks. his biggest was 85lbs. I would be happy with a couple chickens :D

Hiya Fellas,

I am both a fresh and salt water guy...actually just consider me a fisherman. There are plenty of spots to go for Halis on the island. Typically the west coast is the best followed closely by the north and south. The best times are from now to late june (in my opinion). Check out this link for further details:

If you are going to Renfrew for Halis you will likely be fishing Swiftsure Bank. It is 25 miles out and in the shipping lanes so make sure you have a seaworthy craft and a good 2-way. If you have never been you might want to consider a one day charter first with the Island Outfitters crew (again follow the link above). I have never been out with them but have heard nothing but good reports.

Tight lines

Thanks for that, I was told that I wouldn't have to go out far, I was going or thinking of going to the port renfrew area unless you might be able to recommend another better(closer) area, I am running a 18' alumi custom weld, with a 200outboard.

Hi Roscoe,

I am sure that there are closer spots then Swiftsure bank to boat a Hali or 2. In fact, in the last 2 years the largest Hali in the Island Outfitters derby has come from the Jordan River area. My only experience in the Renfrew area is on Swiftsure, I haven`t gone closer to shore so can`t offer any exact locations. My apologies. I would try the gang at Island outfitters for at least a couple of hints. Hope you find a barn door to go with the chickens!

abby where bouts were you fishin, fishin seemed to really depend on where you are, the east side of swiftsure has been slow but the west has been producing steady numbers, most people got there limits, but it's a long run to the other side. Lots of big red snapper though.
