I'm newly into the world of Spey!! :thumbup:
and I have a quick question!!

I'm planning to get a Okuma Helios 8/9wt reel for 13.9 feet 9wt rod!!
Is it a proper setup??

Please share the idea!!

Hi Bravo! That reel would be too small for a spey set up! That particular reel would be more geared towards single hand rods in the 8-10 wt category. For the size of rod you are suggesting, you would need something, with more line capacity. Spey lines are much bigger in diameter and need more room than your typical fly reel, not to mention, spey lines are usually about 40-50 feet longer than your traditional single hand line. In most cases, the average reel size used in a spey combo is the 10/11 wt, not just for line capacity but also to help balance the rod so it is not tip heavy. Hope this helps,

ya i have a 14'Echo spey and i have it matched with a Bauer JM5 reel(thanks Stone) :thumbup: and this setup is balanced PERFECT and i mean perfect.


A good thing to do is take the rod with you and put it on different rods but remember the line adds quite a bit of weight. I had the line on mine already when i tried it on the rod.

Hey I have recently sent my helios 8/9 in for warranty. Got a few chum on it and the drag got burnt! surprised needless to say. I would go with a different reel if I were you. Might have just been a faulty drag system from the factory, will see when it comes back to me. Oh and i agree it is too small for a spey setup....

I too have had a new Okuma fail. I am not impressed by these reels, and I recommend you look into some other brands.
