Varying it makes a difference some days. Closer to the ball = more action

I keep it close (10'-15' max), if you put out more then 20' the rod wont pick up the slack when the pin pulls.

I sometimes go back 30 ft with fllasher (slower action = bigger fish) and up to 60 ft with plugs
