I'm looking to go freshwater fishing late Sept-early Oct up Island. Does anyone know what to fish for and where to fish during this time period.
Any information is much appreciated.
Thanks

It all depends how far you're going up. If it's Campbell River area, I can't help 'ya. But further north, on the tip, the coho will be running about that time on the local creeks/rivers, a little early but not too bad. The west coast systems will be in full swing however, and the hook-nosed northerns will be in, as it's the second run. But the systems that drain the eastern part of the island, it'll be starting.

Coho up there love something flashy and blue. If using flies, anything blue or green should work, with a little flash. Use a sink tip or with split shots, and dead drift. If using hardware, use spoons or spinners, again, blue is key. Use strong gear, those hogs are trains!

Too bad you're not there earlier, as it is the dominant Pink run this year, they peak about beginning of August in the river mouths. They're fun on the fly!

Summer run steelies will be still be running too, especially the west coast streams.

Trout in lakes will be rebounding after a warm summer. Try minnow and leech patterns...strip subsurface with any flyline, and use it accordingly.

Good luck up there. I was just up there 2 weeks ago, and maybe again next month. I use to live there.

Hi Augie,

Thanks for all the great info. When you say 'west coast systems' what are you referring to? Can you specifically name some of the rivers? As it turns out I may not be free until mid-Oct. Any suggestions for that time of year? It could be anywhere on the Island for that matter.
Thanks
