next to no fish in the Albion chum t4est fishery so at this point there is no opening of the river in the forseeable future. There will need to be a big push of fish very soon to have any chance of it being open this October.

The Thompson is still a great river with a lot of hard fighting wild trout in it. Maybe the plight of the Steelhead will wake some people up in fisheries management to see what they can do to save the Thompson River strain of Steelhead.

Not a DFO issue, this falls squarely on the shoulders of MOE(the province) and is fully based on their inability to recognize the fact that those Steelhead are well worth throwing $$$$ at and are considered the most magnificent strain of Steelhead on the planet.

unfortunately, it looks like "the start of the end" for the T
The beginning of the end was in the early 90's when they were getting decimated in the Chum openings @ Nitinat and in the Fraser. They never recovered from that
EXACTLY !!!!!!!!!!! and yet is still goes on.. BRILLANT :wallbash:

The problem with DFO is that it is run from the east by eaterners with an eastern mindset. Out there, DFO's job is to preserve a commercial fishing fleet. Entire towns economies depend on commercial fishing. Take that same mind set out here, where there are several industries that support a town (logging, mining, fishing, growing marijuana etc) and you end up with stupid decisions that make sense for commercial fishing, but not for preservation of a run of fish.

When was the last time there was a DFO minister from the west? Will there ever be one? I doubt it will ever happen. That position holds a lot of power over people's livelihoods in the east, so any ruling party will always give the ministry to an easterner.

can't there be 2, one from the west and one from the east? And i understand that the run was destroyed in the 90's but it went from 20,000 fish down to 10,000 and then lower and lower, and now last year i think the estimate was 900

Last year Craig Orr sat as an observer on one of the boats during the lower Fraser chum opening. I think in his boat alone there were 2 fish intercepted during the short opening. One was was successfully revived in the live tank and released, while the other was too far gone.

There are no easy answers here, we can't just point our fingers at the commercial guys. We pin cussion those steelies up pretty good in the course of the few months that we have up there, there is some impact there, of that there is no question.

Other HUGE impacts are habitat loss and excessive water use in the spawning tribs. No summer flows really limit the carrying capacity of rivers like the Nicola and Deadman.....

And then there is ocean survival........

I will look for the article Craig wrote and post it when I find it.

that's really sad that one steelhead had to sacrifice its live for a measly 172 chum. does anyone know the going rate for chum these days? ( not the roe rates). when you think about it, that steelhead died because of the gold that sits in the does, because that is the only thing making the chum fishery worth while to the commercial guys.

what is really sad is the amount of people whining on the internet . if we had the same that would join the steelhead society or other group that is actually trying to help with the rebuilding of these fish. e-mailing letters dont count.I get really tired of hearing "where should I go to catch steelhead? none left eh'.......well maybee someone should do something about that"...........actually some people are doing more than just complaining or blaming other user groups.

Who knows for sure what the numbers of fish are but one has to wonder with the clarity of the river are these fish just avoiding the nets.
IMO steelhead are a whole lot smarter than chum. Just my :2cents:

On another note I have heard of guys illegally fishing the T right now and whacking a whole bunch of steelies !

I think the poachers need to be poached literally >:D
