I have come by an Islander FR 5 in excellent condition. As I do not Spey fish, I have thought about using the reel for mooching. I would like any possible feedback of comments. Thank you.

If I remember right the FR series was a disc drag reel, correct?
If so I would say it would work fine with some precautions.
I have used large fly reels for my boat reels for over 30 years, some hold up to the salt better than others and some have better drags than others.
Generally fly reels are built a little lighter than mooching reels so they won't take as much abuse, also the spools on fly reels are rarely sturdy enough to fill them with mono line, run a large amount of backing or braid to avoid the mono popping the spool.
I only run 50yrd top shots of mono on my reels and fill the reel with #80 braid.
