I sit here, can't sleep... wide awake, but I know I will not be able to make it into work with no sleep, so.... I am going fishing. Gonna take out the Fly rod as see if I can land my first ever Salmon flyfishing. Already left a message at work saying I wouldn't be in, so there is no turning back now. ;D All I have been thinking about all night is getting out there and giving it a go... Report to follow in this thread when I get back. ;)

I'll start off by saying.... Damn, I am so fricken tired now!! ;D

Anyhow, after waiting in a line up on the Sea to Sky highway for about 30 min, I finally made it to the river shortly after 6 am, I left at around 4 am!! 2 Hrs to get to the river. :-\ Anyhow once I got there I was getting ready to head down and Britguy shows up. So I wait a bit and we head down together. Now remember, I was trying to fly fish. All started off well, the casting was ok, I thought I was mending properly. Oh and what do you know, Britguy is already into one...... then another and another. This went on for quite a while without me hooking into anything. So bring the nice guy that he is, Britguy comes over and offers some tips, which I try to do, and a fly to use. Thanks for the fly BTW. So still nothing, kinda disheartening really, I wasn't really ticked just yet.... ;D Just wondering what I was doing wrong, thought perhaps that I wasn't getting down to them, so I wound up changing up tips. Now, here's how it is..... the wind had picked up a bit, which wasn't helping me at all....and apparently the new tip I put on didn't like me much either, cause after the first case, which went farely well..... the damn thing hit me on about 10 straight casts, once hooking myself in the top of the hand, and 5 more times in the back of the head.... :wallbash: oh and did I mention that now there were a bunch of other guys in the general area hooking fish..... so where was I.....oh yeah, hooked myself a bunch of times, yeah..... now I was pissed!! :-[ I think I scared off Britguy as he slowly made his way up river away from me!! ;D Sorry you had to see that display of language.... wasn't one of my best moments.... so needless to say, I changed up to gear fishing for a bit, still nothing. But now no one else was hooking anything either, so I didn't feel so bad!! ;D After stepping back for a bit, I had a smoke and just watched. Figured that it was time to try someplace else. So I headed to check out the Mamquam. There was a couple people there, a few fish rolling around, so I figure that I would toss some spoons. After three casts I get an encouraging bump, then another and FISHON!! A nice scrappy one, but alas, after some nice pulls and a little arial display my first hooked Pink of the year was gone. Two casts later I was into another one, but after a couple more jumps that one was gone as well. Then it just turned right off, there was a couple still playing around, but other than a tap or two, nothin!! Oh well, that 's just the way it goes. Was a beautiful day out there today, some nice people and one big sreamin jerk.... which would be me!! ;D :wallbash: Anyhow, there it is, had some fun and shed a few drops of blood and don't really feel bad at all that I missed work. But, man, I am gonna sleep tonight. I am surprised I am still up to be honest with you.... ;D

DMW nice to see you out there this morning :D

dont give up on the fly rod you were casting pretty well at first
just need to get that fly down to the fish with a natural drift
and its tough casting with the wind blowing

I think i lost three times more fish than i landed(quick release)
I moved up and down the river after you headed up the Mam but nothing doing they just switched off as the tide changed :(
I heard last night arround 6pm was hot(tide change)
wasn't going to stay arround that long today
I stopped off at Furry on the way back lots off fish jumping but nothing for me seen a couple caught one on fly the other on a buzz bomb
Heading back out to the Squish in the morning
anyone else heading out there ???

I was up there yesterday and was into a few but from noon til after 4 o'clock in the afternoon it did turn off.Nothing all afternoon. I saw alot of fish moving through and even one big spring. From 4-7pm I was into a few more. It was a slow day for sure.I think that big black seal had them all pretty spooked from my observations of his activity. He was on the hunt big time and the fish knew it. I chased him away a couple of times with rocks but he kept coming back. I still had a good day out on the flow as it was my first solo mission in a long time.

Takes time to learn the craft Dave...TR was having some problems too and it's hard to explain how to let your fly get into to right zone...( Thank god merc was there to teach him something) Sometimes your too deep and hanging up, others too high up and nothing...I use a 15ft. med. sink tip on my spey, works perfect with the fewest hangups...
Often tempting to try and move to where you see other guys hooking um but the fish are through out the system, you just have to figure out what path their taking...Ive caught um in close and out a ways..for whatever reason the big ones seem to hang out deeper at least for the ones i've caught so far...You also have to make sure your fly line is always tight...dead in the water is exactly that, you won't feel anything...I try and move the line constantly...sometimes with big mends and deep, other times in towards shore through the slack water...gotten fish both ways...
IMO that's what makes the fly so much fun...you pay your dues in the beginning but it comes pretty quick and it's a total riot to play um.... Can always go back to the coffee grinder and big floats.. :yummy:
BTW we were up both days this weekend but Sat. i'm standing there with frozen feet and this old guy walks in with neop's around his waist and nothing else on and starts fishing with his coffee grinder...stopped by and said "Hi" to him...He was having a blast but damn...
