Tough to use from a side position. I would suggest using a side planer and plug however.
Good ole Limitkiller smacks the Chinook with the side planer and plug, casting from a shore position and often walking the dog(slowly travelling with your presentation down a run.)
I use divers often and they are da bomb, forget the slab weights at home. I think a boat is pretty mandatory for them though. Unless you have a upstream position on some good holding water, in that case load the glob of roe on the leader and send out the diver.
I always use sliding droppers(for the diver), for many reasons, with bait, stay short(6-12 ) inches.

God, I miss him!
And yes, you need a planer from shore - check out Salmon Trout and Steelheader magazine for an ad that sells them cheap mail order form the US.
