ok, my buddys wife is trying to find a john boat for his birthday and she has asked me to help.know i do fly fish ,but out of my pontoon boat so i know nothing about these boats. he will probably use it most of the time by himself. maybe the odd time with his son., so i am thinking a 10ft boat would be just fine.anyone know of someone selling one in decent shape or know where to look at new ones. any info on these boats would be of help aswell. thanks stsfisher.

Hey stsfisher

Searun tackle in Coquitlam sells the Spratley boats in lengths from 8' to 12' and they are very nice. You could also check all of the various fishing sites as most of them have a classified section.

If I was looking for a small boat, I agree with Centerpin about Spratleys. Know a fellow that has one. Its nice and stable. Beautiful fly fishing boat. Jonboats are ok but the smaller models i.e. less than 14 feet have beams that rival canoes (ok a bit wider but not much). I'd prefer a broader beam to keep everything stable (at least I keep my life stable by telling my wife how much I like her broad beam )

Spratleys are very nice boats, and are very stable. For myself cost was an issue, so I went with a 1436jon boat. The only other one that is smaller that I would recommend is the 1236. Below that they are just a fat canoe.

With my boat I can loadf it by myself on top of the truck(I'm not tiny though), I can row any small lake, and also I run around 32Mph on the Fraser and Harrison, with 2 guys in it. I have taken 5 average sized guys up the river with no real problem. But I do run a 20Hp. With the smaller 1236 a 9.9 would be just nice. the 1436 really runs perfect with a 15hp 2-stroke, or 20hp jet.

I think the Lowe or similar 1448 would be just right. for one or two people - they have a nice wide back seat that you can use as a casting platform plus the its very easy to lay down a plywood floor. Check them out. Rated to 25hp.

The 1448 is a very nice boat, but it's in the $2500-$2800 range. and needs at least a 20hp.

I got the impression STS was lokking for something in the smaller, cheaper range. The 1440M is also a very nice size, but still $2200.

I just bought a Spratley 10' medium model. Cost after taxes was $2100. Its a beautiful boat, and solid as its a welded aluminum. Dont expect to find one though as the welder quit and they are not making any right now. You could probably order one through one of their distributors and have it by the spring or possibly sooner. I looked at many different boats before deciding and Spratley won hands down.

I have a few Spratleys left in Stock, just remember they are a lake boat... not a river boat, we have seen a few with fatigue marks on the hull from really big waves and such... they actually have found a welder.... boats could have a little better fit and finish...
