Well folks, I just got in today from a 7 day cruise to Alaska (my kids bought it for us for Christmas). We docked for 10 hours in Juneau and Wendy and I (along with 4 other folks) hopped on a couple of DeHavilland Beavers and flew out to Couverdon Bay to spend 4 hours fishing for Dollies in te estuary and upstream in Couverdon Creek. Our guides, Garret and Zach from Bear Creek Outfitters equipped us with Orvis rods (8 wt) and Ross reels terminated in crystal flash Clouser minnows, and led us into the good water. In the first hour, I landed one small Dollie (about 11") and then a couple of larger 17" beauties, as well as a half dozen light bumps. I was the only experienced flyfisher in the group, so I felt particularly stoooopid when I took a dive into the frigid water of the bay when I tripped on a subversive rock. The water was less than knee deep, so only my arms really got wet, but I did suffer a bruised ego. After the tide began to drop, we hiked up the creek (actually about the size of the Skagit river) and worked a lot of water, but with no further luck. Some bagels with cream cheese and locally smoked salmon, a short flight back to Juneau and then the guys wrapped up the trip by giving us detailed instructions on how to get to a real Alaskan pub (not one for the tourists) for a quick beer before getting back to our ship. The setting was breathtaking (and this from someone who has seen his share of breathtaking BC wilderness) and the guides were very good company as well as helpful to those among us with no fishing experience. It was the absolute highlight of a superb cruising holiday.
