I notice you are allowed to use fin fish for bait when fishing in the Fraser for sturgeon. What would keep an unscrupulous angler from using, say cut plug herring, for "sturgeon", when in fact he is targeting springs?
Never having fished for sturgeon, is the technique that much different that it would be obvious if someone were not really fishing for them, at all?
Do the charter boats out fishing sturgeon ever catch springs as an incidental catch?

Enquiring minds need to know?

I have never caught a spring with my sturgeon setups..I usually use eulchons or smelts(heads off) on a very short leader(24-30 inches), topped off with a 8/0 or 9/0 hook(very large)...
I have however caught sturgeon when set up with bar rigs from the boat targeting springs..One fellow a few weeks ago actually caught two small sturgies while out bar fishing with me. I was using the usual large spin/glo set up but think the Pautzke Gel krill from my storage box that got everywhere when put away upside down had more to do with that....That stuff really attracts the fish....Up till now I have only used it on sturgie baits when fishing is slow.....
Just don't let your kids help put away the stuff. They sometimes leave the lid off and it can get everywhere (Oh well,at least they tried to help)...The neighbourhood cats sure like my boat when that happens..
