I'm thinking of purchasing a Pflueger Summit fly reel model #1656. Curious if anyone has one or if you've heard anything about them. The reel seems sturdy enough and it's put together very well.

I'm feeling the same way (not sure about it), but the more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards buying it. The fly shop here in Honolulu has 2 of them left and they're only $49.99. Spare spools are $19.99. It feels solid and looks well-machined and the disc drag is something I've been looking for.

I have a Pflueger Trion #1978 7/8 reel and extra spool. First year with it and have fished 15 days or so. So far it has been excellent. Absolutley no problems. The drag system works great however i should qualify that by saying that I have not fought a large fish yet so I can't vouch for it totally yet.

I'm runnign a Pflueger Trion on my 5 weight. sweet reel. the strong drag handles pink salmon no problems, and the large arbour makes bringing in the smaller trout super smooth.

Based on what everyone told me, I went out this afternoon and bought it, along with a spare cassette. I had the guy line it with Cortland 444 6F and the spare is loaded with 444 #2 sinking.
I can't WAIT to get home and try this reel out. I imagine the drag would stop a tanker truck if necessary.

right on...that seems like a good deal. I bought mine on ebay for 120 (incl shipping) and spools are another 70 bucks or so on ebay as well. I think mine retails for around 200 so not too bad. I probably would have chosen something like the summit ( as it is everything I wanted and needed) but I was treating myself after a long school year ;D

Because I bought the reel, the spare cassette, the backing and the Cortland lines, he gave me everything for $150.00 (tax included) and threw in a couple of line keepers (the neoprene thingies that go over the reel so the line doesn't peel off). Basically I got the spare cassette for free, which is still ok with me. I MAY go back and grab a cheap rod, just to get out and chuck some feathers. He said if I wanted to go out fishing, just give him a call. If he wasn't available, he'd hook me up with one of his friends who was going that day.
I may take him up on his offer and go out to do some bonefishing. No licence requirements here to fish saltwater, but there's a fairly big freshwater lake not far from where I'm staying so I might give that a try as well...some monster bass in there!
