Hi All,

I am going to be in Nanaimo for the Christmas/ New Year period and may have a few days free from the other halfs family. Just wondering if it is worth bringing the rod with me. I have a 5wt and 8wt and have access to a car.

So, are there going to be some fish about?? and
any recommendations for easy access spots close to Nanaimo?? (good for wading or from shore)
If so what would be the better rod for the conditions??

Thanks

C.

Most of the lakes around Nanaimo are good for trout and Bass. Or you could drive up to Port Alberni and try your luck at hooking into a steely.

Its not really the ideal time for fishing around Nanaimo, but the local lakes are still fishable, although its not super fast action by any means. If you'll settle for any chance to wet a line, they'll do. I've had some steelhead action around new years when I've gone out, but not around Nanaimo, more like Gold River or the Stamp if you can get out there.

Hmmn.

I am hesitant to post, as the Nanaimo has had some glory days (for me, the early 90's) and does have the potential to be that way again, but it will need time to recover.

I do know I heard it was open to retention of one Hatchery fish a day last year later in the season (pretty sad, seeing numbers) but to date, I am under the impression it is closed to the retention of Steelhead once again.

Later in the season is better for these fish.

I have many great drift spots, but if I was fly fishing and looking for easy places to get casts in. I would likely walk the gravel banks just below the highway bridge.

Thanks for all the responses.

I did not really think that there would be too much happening, just thought it might be a chance to wet a line. I am in Calgary but not car so really restricted to close to home. And the stretch of Bow close by is... well i think you could walk across, FROZEN!!! I know not all the Bow is not in this state, but without a car options are limited.

Have a few days to kill so might bring the line anyway. Need to do something to work off all that Christmas feasting!!

Any other options close by are always welcome.
