Just moved to BC and live on the North Shore. The Capilano River is very close, and from what I can see, is really only open for Steelhead (catch and release, single barbless hook), unless you happen to catch a trout under 50 cm, but over 30 cm. I fished for Steelhead a lot in Idaho on the Salmon river and really I enjoyed it. For this posting I have two quick questions. First, in Idaho we would use "Side Planers" when fishing from the banks. I haven't seen where these are not permitted, are they OK to use? Also, by this time of the year, the Steelhead run was over, and didn't really start until the September/October, is that the case here as well?

Also, I want to take my 8 year-old trout fishing, where is a good place to go that is close where you can fish for trout, river or lake?

Thanks.

First ......... Welcome to the Forum.

I personally have never seen anyone use these from the banks ...... as far as I know there is nothing to prohibit their use.

Likewise the Steelhead run is over in this area. I don't know much the exact timing for the Cap, but the Vedder may have Steelhead starting from the latter part of November.

If you want to go a bit farther afield, there are summer run steelhead in a lot of the Vancouver island streams. The stamp has a decent run that peaks in November. The fish have been trickling into most mid and north island systems for the last month and a half.
