I have never been to the Nitinat but have some time this week to check it out. Does anyone know if the Springs are in yet?

Whats the river like for fly fishing or is it mostly suited for gear? What type of gear works?

Thanks in advance!

My cousin fished it yesterday and said it was starting to pick up. :beerchug: Yes, springs are in but the main run is not quite there yet. Prpbably waiting in the sound for a influx of wtare. Go a day or two after a heavy rainfall. Start with flies, sink tip and if all else fails, use gear - Vibrax spinning lures in orange size 6. Check the regs befroe you head out.

Made it up there and yeah my arms got a workout. Fish were not in too bad of shape but I will probably wait until the next rainfall and try again. Will also try fly fishing for all those cutts eating the eggs.

Nice river!

Anyone going up to the lower river, a reminder keep and eye out for the bears. There is one that I ran into and a few others too, he is seemin a little too un-scared an grumpy.
Could be the same one that charged a dog over the weekend
Not a small one, around a 6yr old I would guess, seems healthy, but grumpy
below the the slough area

Yes there were about seven bears up there and I think I saw the one you are talking about. Walked to within 20 feet of us before it stopped and gave a growl and preceeded to walk around us. The guys fishing the same pool as me said it was around earlier and harrased them a little. Rocks did nothing and a bear bomb barely got rid of it.

Was also out on Sunday. Low, warm water, and very few Springs for Nitinat (Maybe a hundred or so per pool?). All of the Springs I touched were already coloured so I let them all go on their merry way. I don't keep them unless they still have sea lice and silver skin. I am very lucky that I can afford to be picky as my freezer runeth over from my ocean adventures.

We need some sky water to push a fresh batch in. The run isn't anywhere near its zenith.

I caught all of mine on orange wool, I saw several taken on spoons as well.

Lotsa bears but that is no surprise, especially early in the season. They are just cruising the shoreline, looking for a fish that might be in the wrong place at the wrong time. No different then the rest of us. I had two bears walk within 10 metres of me and they were no problem at all.
