Many, many of the interior lakes not connected to major flows by significant tributaries never had rainbows before stocking programs in the early part of the last century. The apex predator in the lakes then would have been Tiger Salamanders. Since the stockings only lakes without trout still hold these impressive little beasts, which isn't many. Makes you kind of wonder...until the leaping silver missile at the end of your line snaps you back to attention.

Many of the higher altitude lakes here on the coast were stocked with rainbows too. I wonder what species may have been lost to this practice.
