Are we talking winter runs or summers. Or either! ;D No worries Ortho, it'll happen, and when it does I hope I'm there.

I landed my first fly caught steel of the year this summer and believe me it will be worth the wait!

I got really lucky and landed one on my second trip out with the 8wt.

I am sure it is alot harder in the winter though.

I will bring out the flyrod on our local river starting in march this year, stick with the trusty old 3106 untill then!

Ask Ribwart how many times he had to head out to manage to land his first steelhead on the fly ;D

Still looking for my 1st. winter run on the fly, last year all I could hook up with was some nice bull trout. It was a rush to think you have your first steelhead on the fly but after a bout a 30 second fight you knew they were bulls ;D The fly of choice was a modified GP in red or orange or purple.

Ortho-I feel your pain brother. I feel it. This year is going to be my third targeting them, and I swear it's going to be the one I loose my virginity on. We're both too long in the tooth to let this continue. :beerchug: :beerchug:

Not sure how I got a personal thread out of a posting to another, but now that it is here, I am forcasting the first steel' of the year for me will be next Friday, Dec. 14 when I drift the Stamp River with Ogobogo. Now this will likely be a gear fish, so I will forcast my first FLY caught steelhead will arrive when I target them HARD at th e end of MArch......let's say........March 28,2008!.....So there you are....My prognostication for this years firsts!!.....I will also forcast a bit slower year than last year locally, but I will land 16 fish on the mainland, and the same amount on Vancouver Island for a total of 32.......That's my story and I am sticking to it!!!
Ortho 8)....................Anybody else wanna step up??

Cast the fly on the stamp a bit while your out there ortho...chances are good you'll find a fish on the end of your line pretty quick, just pick your spots. I have no doubt you'll get into your first on the fly soon regardless...no doubt whatsoever!!!

Hope to see a heck of a story when you get back!

Ortho, we'll see who wins the race! I will be looking for my first steel on the fly this year as well, only been out twice before though.......I will also be looking to entice said steel with my own flies!

Come Jan 1st, I am still up in the air about making, though how I want to go.....every year for the last 5 I have been fishing from first light on new years day because the wife always works, but alas this year she has it off. So now instead I must drink till I can't anymore and then try and get to the river before last light :drunk:

But I will have some time off over the holidays where you can find me hunting for early steel in prep for the boxing day derby!!!

Ha ha - beat ya! Mine was in early December! Not that it's a race or anything. Had the actual fly mounted in the frame with the photo! Hey ortho - just remember to keep the fly when you do get your first one. Only a matter of time... ;)
