I would like someone to describe for me " How to set-up for a Steelhead Drift". I prefer to flyfish but would like to expand into drift fishing using egg fly patterns and learn how to drift it through a pool using drift system of fishing.

I have a reel & rod but don't know much about floats, line, pencil lead, swivel set-up and bouncing off the bottom.
Can someone give me some basic information or recommend a simple, cheap book. I am senior and don't have much $$ to throw around.

cheers......

cadet...there are many decent books around, my recommendation would be to go to your local public library, if you have one available to you...there should be some books in various branches around your neck of the woods....I even think there is one called "Steelhead Drift Fishing" and another called "Float fishing for steelhead"...see if you can find anything remotely resembling steelhead fishing in your local library and then get back to me with questions and such, and I would be happy to help you out with the details...
Just post here,
I'll be reading,

Steelhead drift fishing is a great book. Written by Bill Herzog and put out by Amato Publications.
It's a bit dated, but it has a lot of helpful info. Same goes to the float fishing book as Ribwart mentioned.
You may also want to check out the STS magazine. I look forward to EVERY issue. Come to think about it, this month's issue is about due. 8)

Fishhog and Ribwart: Thanks for the titles......that's what I like about this website......good advice......and quick replies...
thanks a lot to both of you......and will check out both of these titles.........and hopefully they have them but our fishing section is a little skimpy.
Might have to do an inter-library loan ....but I'm on it.....and library is cheap source.....easy on the wallet...... : )

thanks

Here is a general setup for drifting for steelhead (or Salmon)

Usually your leader will be 12-18" long. You can use split shots instead of pencil lead in clearer water conditions. As for the floats there aer a lot of selections, Drennans are the best for clear water, however the new foam and balsa DNE floats are pretty nice too plus a little cheaper. The foam DNEs are about $1.50 compared to a drennan that is about $7. Or you can always use the traditional "dink" float.
