Professori. Good Luck at the Cow on the 24th. This is my first year at the river and am loving it. Two trips flyfishing for trout and I have done pretty well considering it is my first try at flyfishing on a river. Several average size but feisty rainbows and a very nice brown trout, my first, all on elk hair caddis flies.
Lots of hatches in the mid afternoon. Have heard from others on the river that bead head nymphs are working also. Gave these a go with no luck but am not confident yet in fishing nymphs in a river as I prefer to see the drift of a dry fly so far.
Have been fishing approximately the mid portion of the fly fishing only section on the river. Lots of pontoons drifting by with all of them reporting good success from the lake down to where I was. I am now dreaming of getting a pontoon or maybe getting a hold of my dads so i can explore more of the river.
Not sure what your experiences are on the Cowichan and of course my knowledge is limited but from what I have heard the pontoons have to pull out at Skutz falls which is before Sandy Pool. Maybe it is possible to portage around the falls and then head down towards Sandy Pool but their are several canyon sections between. Again not sure what the water is like in those canyons. Have been curious about different sections of the river and if you can drift them.
I may be going back on Friday and will try to make a report and also post some pics. This river is extremely beautiful and I am thoroughly enjoyiing exploring it.
