Rally Against Private Power Development on the Pitt river
Not Public, Not Green, Not Wanted

On March 11, TAKE BACK THE POWER!

British Columbians must stand up for our public utility and our wilderness areas. These private power projects threaten both the integrity of BC Hydro as well as wildlife and fish habitat. Take a stand on Tuesday, March 11 at the BC Power Summit and let the private power companies and the provincial government know that BC wants clean, public, and responsible energy – for generations.

What: Rally Against the BC Government’s Development of Private Power

When: Tuesday March 11

Time: Meet: 12:30 PM Rally: 1:00 PM

Where:
Meet: SFU Harbour Centre, corner of Hastings and Richards (12:30)
Rally: 1:00 PM at the SFU Wosk Centre, on Seymour Street between Hastings and Pender.

In 2002 the BC Government announced a new Energy Plan that forbade BC Hydro from investing in new sources of hydroelectricity. The provincial government turned to private power providers, creating a gold rush race, with private interests snapping up water licenses on wild streams and rivers throughout BC. Over 60 water licenses have been granted to private hydro projects in the last 7 years, and there are 433 more applications pending.

These power developments are NOT small hydro – many are massive megaprojects with serious environmental impacts, including transmission lines through provincial parks and old growth forests, as well as irreparable damage to wildlife and fish habitat.

The government calls this green power. It isn’t. Let’s send the BC government a strong message and stop the giveaway of our resources.

Organized by the Canadian office and Professional Employees Union Local 378, Western Canadian Wilderness Committee, the Council of Canadians, West Kootenay EcoSociety, and BC Citizens for Public Power.

I have been talking with my fishing buddies and co-workers some of whom have cabins on pitt lake. I hope they all come to the rally. I really hope everyone is talking about this because the bigger the buzz we can create the better. It's tough for a lot of us to take a tuesday off work to be there but we all know how devastating this project and those that follow would be. There is an alternative. It's called site "C" and BC hydro is working on getting it approved.

Your kidding, right. Have you seen the devastation that site "C" will create on the Peace. There is an alternative alright. Look at wind generation and tidal generation. There is no need for us to increase any hydro generation in order to sell it to California!!

Well, it was a good rally all-in-all! There was about 100 people which was very disapointing! :wallbash: Thank god there is one more meeting left, http://www.bcfishingreports.com/forum/index.php?topic=6550.0 . I think we got our message across but from what I gather the media did not air it. Did anyone see the rally on any of the new stations? Thanks to all those that attended and looking forward to seeing more of you at the next meeting in Pitt meadows on March 25.

 Rick

Was Mark Angelo from BCIT there?
He is the originator of River Days and a very vocal defender of all our rivers.
I'm off to Mexico for the next week so hopefully I'll catch him tomorrow and see what he is doing regarding this with his resources.
I'll try to forward it if time avails.
