Damb that was a good response, when i was younger my first job was working on boats, i dont know if you need to sand it off like fiberglass, but being under a boat for hours with a dust mask on is no fun.... :wallbash:
BS
you could find some one to sandblast it using a medium like walut shells. Guy I know did this to an old smokercraft and it came out looking pretty good.
Go to an automotive or marine place and get marine paint stripper. Works like a hot damn it took about 6 layers of marine enamel off of these brass lights i have in no time.
If you don't like chemicals then I would agree with the walnut or a glass bead blast. Using a wire wheel will melt the aluminum and gall it, not a good base for new paint.
Here's a link to a very good thread on the riverjet forum about painting your aluminum boat, from start to finish, he stripped his paint with a random orbit and a surface prep disk. Excellent thread as it goes through the painting process step by step with a professional.
