Sage 1800 Series Fly Reel

Bought the 330-1850R and havent been impressed with it at all. The drag on mine is all or nothing and likes to adjust itself while trolling to the point where it'll start free spooling line out. The first time i was casting with it, spool fell off and (murphy's law) went over the side. But the net was handy and i still have it. it also tends to spit a loop of line out the side of the reel between the housing and the spool, which is just what you want when a fish is on. I don't know, maybe its just this particular reel thats being fussy or its me...but i own a few reels and have never had this frustration with any of them. Anyone else own one and what are your experiences with it? I'm thinking of returning it for something different.

I bought a sage reel once and my experience was not quite as bad as yours but enough for me to return the reel. They feel cheap and there are many other reels in the same price point that would do a better job. I have dragonfly reels from many years ago that would out perform this sage.
I have this same reel but the 8wt. MY dad has the 8wt&5wt and he loves both. I have stopped chum dead with the drag on mine also(first day with it had to test its boundaries) the reel has been nothing but great for us. I think perhaps you got a faulty one, try returning and getting another one and see if the experience is the same :hmmm: Or i agree with getting a different reel.

Hey Jed, this doesn't sound right. I believe you just got a bad one. I have a 8wt and a 5wt and although I am learning now I never had any problem with them. I feel them nicely and smoothly.
