I picked up a Shimano Crestfire 100D today, to use for catching coho. I paried it with a 6'6 (couldn't find a 7 foot) medium fast action Simano rod. Now, is it ok to use a bait or level wind reel for coho and trout ect? I've only used spincast reels in the local rivers, and I've stuck with my abu 6500c for the bigger fish and bigger rivers. Does anyone else here any experiance with this reeL? Good, bad? I'm taking this reel out tonight and see how it goes.

This reel is an awsome Bass, Trout and other small fish reel. I think that this reel would be ok when fishing small rivers that contain small coho. But hooking up with a large coho, chum, or chinook could be a challenge. Drag system might not be appropriate for fairly large fish.

My opinion

I used it today.. I don't mind it.. but there is one thing I notice, that bothers me. It seems the part (sorry for my ignorance) the line comes out of (eye ?) does not rotate side to side while casting.. only retrieving. This seems to cause a backlash on casts if I don't manually center it before casting. Should this be moving right to left when casting? I know it does on my larger abu reel. Thanks
