well got back from the island on monday night and i only got one day of fishing in while i was gone and the spot was sidney spit and surounding islands! started by stacking the down riggers with 2 rods on each on the left down rigger we used anchovie and herring in a teaser head and green prisom flashers! the otherside was a hardware top was a spoon and the botttom was an awesome looking plug i found looking for fishing gear at a flea market here in cloverdale, none the less we started fishing from about 8 am for the flood tide on sunday was not till 9:30 as the flood came and went not a sniff on anything we had in the waser then we got a good hit on one of the bait rods then there was nothing!!!! we checked the bait side first and found that we had been dragging a little ling cod around for about 5 min re rigged our rods and trolled around till noon without a strike from a salmon(mind you we were reading fish all over at every depth) so i decided to pull all our gear and start jigging for salmon instead! i rigged my 7 foot trout rod with 10lb maxima ultra green(yes trout rod) and lowered my anchovie looking jig right to the sandy bottom where the fish were reading on the sounder! with in 20 seconds i had a solid strike thinking it was a cod of some type i slowley reel up the line from 80 ft of water the whole time my buddy is like you got a salmon and in was like um it feels like a ling or something smaller than a salmon after a see saw battle i finallt get a look at my fish at the end of the line and it was a salmon and it was huge!!!!! My poor trout rod took the worst beating it has ever seen an as soon as the fish seen the boat it was gone back down to the bottom!!!! 15 min later i got my second look at it and for the second time straight down to the bottom again! as i was gaining line on it and bringing it to the boat my friend netted the fish in the first attempt (perfect net job) now i cheered my ass of for this was the biggest fish i've ever caught on the light gear i was using 24lbs and it's length was 35 inches nicest red spring of the year so far for me! the rest of ythe day we jigged every where and hooked ling after ling all released of coarse till i got a huge ling with the same lure and the ling came in at 14 lbs and that was it i was so sun burnt that i had to call it a day!!!!! i'll post pic's of the nice salmon when i get them done up tomorrow oh yeah by the way my spring was missing it's adipose fin so i would imagine it was from a hatchery somewhere!
