Yesterday when I was out fishing I hooked into what I thought was a small trout but when it came in I noticed it was a very small coho that was starting to turn dark. I started to wonder why and how a fish would return that small. Does anybody know?
Heres a picture of the fish-

25 cm isn't that big. I've only kept one that was 26.5 cm. To be exact. They are aggressive little buggers and love any kind of natural bait. The last one I caught was well under 20 cm.

I would never dream of bonking something that size. Seems a little childish to me.
Just curious about how they tasted. It was legal and very damn good. So you can keep your childishcomments to yourself. ;D

It's hard to tell the size of the fish but why call some one childish???? Sure we all know that these fish that are returning are not able to spawn so why waste them. I thing ethics are in play here...

I'm not surprised at the size of that fish. Its small but well within the range of what you would expect a 2 year old coho to look like. Jacks and Jills that return one year earlier than their cohorts (year class) come back for one reason.... to spawn. But to spawn and 'want to spawn' are two entirely different matters. Most Jacks and Jills that come back are able to spawn successfully or at least are able to, if given the chance by the dominant age class. There are others though that have returned simply on the urge to do so with no real sexual maturity to back up that urge. From the look of that fish, I would think it is very sexually immature and has more of the 'urge' rather than the 'stuff'. Reminds me of when I was younger, hogging the bathroom and my mom would say "what are you doing?" To which I summoned all my fisheries knowledge and not wanting to lie to mommie said, with all seriousness.... "just spawning...be out soon".
