anyone here on the forum willing to give my dad and I some quick lessons on the river. please, please :beerchug: I know a couple basic casts and can get it out there and i have tought these to him but it still seems tougher then it should be and would love some tips.

of coruse this would be during the day while we fish and hopefully catch fish. Im thinking the Vedder of course as we wanna get some big stinkies on our speys and get the casting experience for the upcoming steely season.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help

if not then i guess we will have to dump some cash on lessons :-\ :-\

HUH ??? i dont get that JBJ

why the comment on big bix stores? I hardly ever fish at A&N unless i need something quick and not fly related as A&N is the closest place to me. everything fly fishing related i buy a M&Y and this is where i would be getting lessons from (if i absolutely have to) i just dont exactly have that much money laying around :( and i know the peeps at M&Y would give me some tips but a tip in a parking lot will never compare to one on the water.

Hey Hook
Reaction fly and tackle did some spey claves last year at cultus throughout the season. Give them a call perhaps they know someone or would be able to tell you when their next one is, and they are usually free to attend :peace:

yes i have been to the spey clave with RFT however tossing a dry line on a lake is how should i say "simple" compared to doing it on moving water with a heavy sink tip. I was just looking for some help but i guess noone is willing.

guess i will look at talking to the people at M&Y :-\

Thanks though

that would be greatly appreciated Jim and i will have my spey and single hander at the fishout

I was at M&Y today and their spey classes are in April :wallbash: however Adrian did say that they could possibly put something together if my dad and i didnt want to wait :drunk: one thing she did say though that seemed strange to me was that if this happened we would still have to learn with WOOL on the line because if there is a hook then they are technically guiding  just thought that seemed strange to me. I mean its always better to learn while fishing. the first day i was teaching myself to fish a single hander i caught and subsequently missed about 20fish before i finally got one ;D

once again Thanks JBJ

P.S. did i really say anything about Cabela's that much  thought i only mentioned i got some boots and waders from them to try them out. I think others have mentioned just as often or more about things.

I took a lesson from Dana Sturn, an FFF certified spey instructor, and well known and respected in the field. He told me that it was very important to practice casting, not practice fishing. If you want to learn to cast, you need to concentrate on the cast, and as soon as you fish the cast, you stop thinking about it and start concentration on catching fish. If you do catch a fish, the time spent playing the fish and landing it is also time you are not casting. For that reason, lawn casting, lake casting and any other non-river practice are very good as well. You are learning to cast, not fish.

when on the lake i cast no problem. I mean i can cast its just the snap i have troubles with most of the time. I think it has something to do with what im doing with my arms or something :wallbash: it might just be because i only had an hour of sleep before our last day fishing so i just didnt have the energy to do it :-\ I would get it if i work at it more however getting a bit of help would help speed this up.

what about the snake roll ?? Didnt you tell me you knew how to do it after watching youtube videos ?? im not a great spey caster but good enough to get it out there, i showed you the circle C cast and Snap T cast while shooting line out .. Thanks Berg. He showed me how to shoot line on the cast once figured out the line shoots out nicely as you seen last weekend, try to get in with the guys that spey fish allot and know what there doing a good guy Tim from M&Y is a crazy spey caster.

well knowing how to do it and actually doing it are 2 different things :-\ I mean i can do it but not perfectly. I can get the line out so its fishing, but to learn how to use less effort to do so would be better as its tiring after hours of fishing.

I was watching more spey videos on youtube today and noticed that none of them seemed to be snapping the bottom in but rather pushing the top arm out :-\ Is this not wrong? (i was told you snap in the bottom hand)or did it just appear this way  I was watching one and it had all sorts of casts and some seemed pretty pointless actually. It was a RIO trailer for their casting video so i would imagine there is scenerios where these casts would be best but they just looked more awkward then anything.

I plan to try fishing with more Spey guys this upcoming Steely season FF, so if any spey chuckers out there dont mind having a newbie or two hanging around let me know  Thanks

I will be kicking around the Okanagan for a while later this month, if you are anywhere near Vernon at anytime let me know and i will try and help you out, i was going to do another Speycasting Clinic on the Vedder next month, but not sure if there would be enough interest at this time of year, will be fishing around the Okanagan .

Thanks for the offer Speyghillie however even with family in the Okanagan i dont get up there much :-\ and about doing a clinic down here I would bet there would be more interest then you think.

maybe toss up a thread asking and see how many people are in. (i'd be in and sure my dad would be also)

I have to say a huge thanks to a member who i wont name (he knows who he is) for lending me a couple spey casting videos, which i will be getting soon  Great guy and thank you.

P.S. I didnt seem to have as much problem casting today as i wasnt as tired and i also took another look at some videos online.

Hi jetboat Jim,
The answer to that is nothing,........ as i am just meeting a buddy and helping him with his casting, but he might not be able to make it there on time, so i will have to wait til next time i'm back over, it was just for a coffee and a few casts.... not a class.. just a hr or two.
But if you see a little blue Suzuki car , come down for a chat, and bring the rod.
