Went down to check things out with my wife, kids and Father-in-Law. We weren't doing any fishing, just doing a recce for the summer (picnics at the day use area).

I counted 5-6 pontoons on the water along with a guy who was out in an aluminum pram. I didn't see anything caught in the 20 mins or so we were there, but on the way out I stopped the car to talk to a guy loading his toon into his truck. He said he caught a bunch of small trout with a few larger ones and a couple of bass. He didn't really seem like the talkative type, if you know what I mean.

I stopped into my local shop on the way home and the guy behind the counter said he was on Spider Lake two Tuesdays ago with his GF and they were into 20-30 fish in the afternoon. I forgot to ask him if there was a hatch going on, but he did volunteer that an olive or red Doc Spratley were good flies. He tried a black one and the fish shut down...went back to the red and more success.

I plan on going back down in a couple of weeks to do some fishing. I'll post a report.

Spider Lake update...June 9

Fished on the lake 3 times in the last 7 days. Some good fishing at times then off it goes.
The eagle is most exciting. I have watched it take numerous fish and even wack a goose...swim to
one of the islands, let go of the goose and do its thing...

The fishing has been good on chronomimds and green/red Doc spratleys. I even landed a nice bass using a chronomid.

Of course the WORM guys always do pretty good...too bad this doesn't become a fly only lake...maybe even a fly only lake and catch and release...

This could become a sensational fishery if that even did occur.

Cheers

I am going up to spider tomorrow ( June 11).....and will be looking for Bass......if I can't find any bass , then will see if those trout will take something.
I'll post something if I catch anything.....if I get skunked..........you will only hear the sulking and whining.

Anyone tried Quennel Lake near Cedar?

Re: Spider Lake - June 16

Went up Spider today and tried to find some bass.
Fished the shoreline and tried a few flies.......leeches, minnow imitations. Not much happening in the morning.
Then I found a shoreline and saw a few splashes....went to investigate and noticed a weasel ( mink?) was fishing.....

I tried his spot and found some small bass......hooked up with 4 in about 15 minutes.....all small but what a fight....they put the hatchery rainbows to shame with their power. Most impressive.
I watched some guy earlier in the day lose a rather large bass. He was trolling something on the end of a spinning gear rig and brought this big fat small mouth to the gunnels and then it flipped off......just as his buddy was attempting to net it.....the premature release and one happy bass.

The bay just beside me had a pile of rises feeding in about 8' of water...lots of fish but all small trout feeding on midge hatch?
They were very small trout......20cms or so.....must be this year's catchables.....they jump and slash at just about anything on the surface.

There was about 6-8 boats on the water and it seemed pretty slow...didn't see too many fish being played or releasedd.

B.G.Machine: Yes.....they are smallmouth......
if you like fishing for Bass.....there are a number of lakes on the South end of Island that have Bass.
Quennell Lake has larger bass.......it's near Cedar - south of Nanaimo.

good luck and write a report and let us know what type of flies are working ( assuming you're flyfishing?)

If you're looking for a fish buddy for the day....give me a call.....and p.m.

cheers....
