Just returned from fishing the last few hours of daylight on the Squamish just below where the Mamquam comes in. More and more fish showing up all the time. The water was in pretty good condition, a little higher than it has been the past few weeks but not close to where it has to be for the flood of fish to come in.
All the fish I saw, caught and saw caught were chum. That said, many were very fresh and guys were keeping them. I kept one beauty male about 14 pounds that had just had his purple bars faintly showing on the silver sides. To the smoker he will go!
The fish came in on the high tide at around 4:30 and for about 2.5 hours after that (until I couldn't see my fly in the air and had to cast by feel alone) there was lots of activity and not many guys - maybe 6 in the run below the Mamquam. Lots of holding fish too, in the deeper sections, and lots of travelling fish up further on the river that weren't interested at all what I was offering them. I didn't see any fish in that terrible dinosaur shape they get later in the season.
The guys fishing gear were hitting fish on pink wool only, in the deeper water. No coho though. All in all, a great night.
