Steelhead Society of B.C. News Release

Bonaparte Creek Habitat Rehabilitation Project Completed

The Steelhead Society of BC retained the services of Wallis Environmental Aquatics Ltd to undertake this project. The decision was made to take advantage of the window of opportunity to immediately begin construction once permitting was in place, during the winter of 2013, instead of waiting until all of the project funding was secured. The reason for this simply was otherwise project construction could possibly be delayed a full year until another suitable winter low water construction window was available.

Final site planning was completed by January, 2013. Rock delivery was completed as scheduled by the end of February, 2013. Construction of the cross channel weir including rock and wood complexing upstream and rock complexing downstream were undertaken in a six day period during March 1- 7, 2013.

The project was constructed as planned and the resulting site features were performing well as of construction completion.

Representatives of the Bonaparte Watershed Stewardship Society, DFO, as well as the rancher who owns the adjacent property visited the site. All were pretty excited to see the project going in and appreciated this kind of SSBC support for the Bonaparte watershed plan.

In total 47 loads of rock, 16 Large Woody Debris units and 970 cuttings were utilized.

The SSBC would like to thank everyone who made this project possible. Generous funding partners included: BCFFF, Kingfishers Rod and Gun Club, Steven Rice of Nicola Regional District, Totems Flyfishers of BC, and not least of all, the people who stepped up and supported the November fund raiser with donations and purchases.
