Hi guys,
i have been on this site a month or 2 and have learnt quite a bit so i decided to share my 1st topic.I am a rookie steelheader and I have been out steelheading 3 times last year, to no avail.....yet. On Tuesday i decided to head up to the Stave and try again for the 1st time this year. The wind was howling when i got there around 11:30 AM but stopped almost immediately. The river was pretty clear. i tried some roe bags, pink worms, and some jigs as well. I fished around the dam and made my way down along the bank past the bowl (i think that is what it is called) and also fished the little creek below the boat launch.. I didn't catch anything but it was a good 3 hours on the river. I am looking forward to catching my 1st steelie. one quick question, how is the stave for Steelies? I met one nice chap fishing the dam area and he mentioned that he caught about a dozen on the stave.I know the main river is the Vedder but the stave is closer living in the tri-cities. When (hopefully soon) I catch one i will post a pic........... This is a great site and although unsuccessful so far. Also, any other fish on the water that I can target at this time of year?
Great site this is!!!!

Welcome to BCFR Dwayne12. I have heard of guys pulling out some steel from the stave, but you really have to put in some time there. For better chances for your first steel, it would be worth your time to hit up the vedder or chehalis. As for other species to target right now, there is Bull Trout (or Dollies, you can refer to the thread "Bull Trout" for more info). Also I believe that the cutthroat trout fishing is good right now.

The Stave will have some good cutthroat fishing over the next few months and well into the Spring. (watch carefully along the shoreline and when the salmon fry start to emerge, the fishing can be very good.) There is also a good population of whitefish around the dam, and they can be caught on the fly as well. As for steelhead, do not give up on this fishery, but I will give you some info on the Stave if you want to PM me.......Ortho 8)
