The Vedder River Steelhead Snaggers club is once again taking up residence at several spots in the lower river with the usual long line flossing method being actively employed. This is absolutely sick, and in my mind their is no valid reason to camp your butt at this well known location and thrash this water with a 10 foot leader and pretend you are getting these fish to bite..........I hope the wind continues to blow and you all freeze your a$$es off!!! :pissed:........Ortho

Yes , I witnessed this myself yesterday and it really is sad to see how people continually decide to fish this way even when approached and asked to fish ethically ( no flossing ) All you get is the old " mind your own business " or the classic " #%&$ off "
Really does take the fun out of fishing when your witnessing that kind of crap on the river.
Oh well , bring on the spring trout fishery !!

maybe we should get a group of us together and go educate them :wallbash: see if they enjoy a cold winter swim LOL I havent seen them out yet but its only a matter of time because I like the canal for the fly water it has. Think they would enjoy a spey or trailer fly tossed at them  these people take away from the enjoyment of all types of fishing and with this milder weather i guess they are out for steel instead of sticking to the summer/fall fisheries :'( :'(

guess steelheading isnt for the hardcores anymore

These moronic donuts that intentionally drag a hook into a fishes mouth know exactly what they are doing and I must say are very good at it....Illegal?....no....Ethical........no.....stupid....yes!....All they want to do is get a rod bent, period!...These guys are very good fishers an use "ethical methods" most of the time...What drives them to intentionally want to snag a fish? I really don't get it.....Probably half the fish are released, because they are not caught in the mouth, and usually a wild fish will be released, but not always....They just want to feel a fish on their line......They are not there to fill their freezers, and they will not listen to anyone who tries to tell them that the poor fish are sitting ducks.......They don't give a $hit!!
Like I said earlier, I hope they freeze their butts off and fall in the river!..............Ortho

In talking to people over a number of years I have always said and agreed that a leader length of 24"-30" in inches is all that is required. Seriously, what would it take to get this made into a regulation? This could be applied to any system after its inception. my :2cents:
(I agree with you on this one JBJ) :)

If a person like me can catch steelhead without resorting to flossing in gin clear water anyone can learn.
Ethics means a lot, if you don't believe that or care to then I quess the steelhead don't mean a whole lot to you.
I agree with others here, a video camera would not be received well. Where do I take mine camera to shame these people. I've got thick skin and it wouldn't be the first time I've been cussed out.
Thomas does it all the time when I tell him white trucks are gay!!!
Sorry Tom just funnin'... :drunk:

It seems to me the ones that are out there flossing are new to the sport and don't have alot of ethical education. Look at the the returning numbers alone, what are springs at 15-20 thousand in the system through the fall, which is what most flossers target. How many steelhead do we get per year 3 maybe 4 thousand. These fish need all the protection from illegal, unethical practises we can provide.
Steelhead are the holy grail of the west coast, everything that is involved is more precise, your presentations, approach to the water, your bait, hell even your gear has to be in top shape. Fishing during the season is different, anglers you meet on the water are generally more friendly, there is rotation fishing practiced, there is concern for the runs, and the health of the fish stocks.
If you think DFO gives a rat crap about this please put your head back in the sand. With them purposing implementations on the fraser to protect weak stocks nothing has been said to define ethical and sporting practices. The implementations are also designed for the fraser, nothing has been said about the tribs yet. Alot of things that surround our sport is left to common sense and promoting ethical practises and is for the most part left to be self policed by the individual angler, ie when you catch your quota you leave common sense.
Mob mentality is not the answer, but if a a photo of someone using questionable methods is used to promote proper practices I'm all for it.
T & A can I come along I promise I'll be good
Cheers,
Crazy D

Flossing is still snagging....the fish do not attempt to bite the hook and the hook landing in the face/mouth of the fish is just luck. It's just like whipping the biggest treble hook and weight out into the water and reeling it in! The only difference is "flossing" uses a legal hook and the weight goes to the bottom before reeling it in and as I recall the synopsis says snagging is illegal. I still think that there should be a CORE program for fishing just like hunting...to me there is no difference, rod or rifle, the ethics still remain and they should be taught and, if neccessary, enforced...fishing and hunting is a right that should be treated as a privilage and I feel any other view is irresponsible. The snagging issue can be resolved, however the group in power needs to come to a common conclusion. As well I agree with G_C that squabbiling amongst ourselves will not acomplish anything except creating anger and frustration....the only way to fix this issue is to unite as a common voice!
